Summary

From the Italian crime legend Andrea Camilleri comes The Potter's Field, the 13th mystery featuring the inimitable Inspector Montalbano.

A major BBC4 television series.

Winner of the CWA International Dagger Award 2012.

While Vigàta is wracked by storms, Inspector Montalbano is called to attend the discovery of a dismembered body in a field of clay. Bearing all the marks of an execution-style killing, it seems clear that this is, once again, the work of the notorious local Mafia. But who is the victim? Why was the body divided into 30 pieces? And what is the significance of the Potter's field?

Working to decipher these clues, Montalbano must also confront the strange and difficult behaviour exhibited by his old colleague Mimi and avoid the distraction of the enchanting Dolores Alfano - who seeks the inspector's help in locating her missing husband. But like the Potter's field itself, Montalbano is on treacherous ground, and only one thing is certain - nothing is quite as it seems....

The Potter's Field is followed by The Age of Doubt, the 14th in the series.

Fine storytelling

Montalbano at his most human and humane. Complex case, complex solution. Camilleri is a genius.

Brilliant

A marvellous story, I wholeheartedly recommend it. One of the best novels in a brilliant series.

A classic Moltabano story

This is an excellent performance of the book, well paced and nuanced and easy to follow the different characters.

The story follows the development of the main characters but might be a bit tricky for a newcomer to the series (if you are new to these stories it is probably best to start at the beginning).

This book has Inspector Moltabano in slightly bleak mood, but the twists he has to go through to put all to rights in his little world are ingenious. The humour and self-deprecation is subtle and well balanced as always. The author/translator manages a light touch even when dealing dismembered bodies and gore, such a relief from the slash and hack fashion in crime stories.

This book has been a pleasure to listen to, I am off to find the next…

Camilleri at his best.

My favourite after "the snack thief" and "the terracotta dog". Montalbano here not only has to solve a case but also save the life of his friend and colleague Mimi'.
Love when he talks to himself. Love when doing this he makes you realise how, if you think and understand you will always end up doing the right thing. A must read of the series.

A different kind of story

I really enjoyed this, as usual. Only one main crime in this one, but the subplot, usually a second crime that intertwines with the main one this time involves one of his colleagues and is surprising and brings out a little more philosophy than usual.

As always the narration is entertaining and well-paced…10/10.

Am looking forward to the next in the series.
