Publisher's Summary

When what seems like a normal pit stop turns into more than just gas and food, a lost traveler finds himself searching for the truth of a 20-year-old mystery.

Detective Gino Canale doesn't believe in a hereafter, let alone ghosts looking for closure. But when his reoccurring dream implies that his grandparents' deaths might actually have been homicides, not to mention that he's hearing bells that don't exist and smelling a pipe when no one is smoking, he realizes he's either connecting to the other side - or going crazy.

And he's not sure which thought scares him more.

What did you love best about The Pit Stop?

I loved that it was multi genre and yet a really quick listen. The whole story was there eve n though it was short.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes! It was very intense and suspenseful. Ghosts & secrets & murders... Oh my!

Have you listened to any of Michelle Babb’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Michelle Babb always provides a great performance! I especially liked the accents she did for some of the characters. Even though this book was very short she brought each and every character to life. I can't wait to hear what she narrates next!

    Any additional comments?

This series must be listened to (or read) in order. This is the first book. I can't wait to listen to The Depot: When Life And Death Cross Tracks!

Gino has been having dreams about his dead grandparents. They seem to be warning him of danger. Is the warning for real? Who would want to hurt him and his wife? How could it be related to his grandparents who died over twenty years ago?

***This series is suitable for mature young adult through adult listeners (or readers) who enjoy short supernatural mysteries with a bit of romance and ghostly intervention :)

Would you listen to The Pit Stop again? Why?

This was a fun short story. It really went too quickly and it made me want to listen again. What could be better than ghosts and a mystery? For me, it was great.

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favorite character was Gino because I felt we heard form him more. He help us understand the backstory and had ghostly encounters.

Which character – as performed by Michelle Babb – was your favorite?

I love all of Michelle Babb's characters. She gives everyone their own unique voice so it is easy to tell them apart. This to me is what is missing from some audio books and what helps to make Michelle stand out for me as a reader since they can enhance your listening pleasure or kill it. Michelle always enhances every book I have listened to her read.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I found myself laughing more with this book when I would figure things out.

""Listen to that tiny voice inside ...""

The Pit Stop is a short story which is packed with atmospheric and character. Twenty years before, Gino Canale's grandparents had both died seemingly peacefully in their sleep on the same night. Although it was odd, the case had only a very brief follow up before being closed. Then suddenly, shortly after making detective, Gino starts to have dreams about them, smells pipe tobacco and hears door chimes where none of these exist. Another couple is found dead, just as his grandparents had died all that time before ....

A mysterious little story in a down to earth setting, it was intriguing but too short. The characters were well portrayed, mostly, but tumbled too rapidly from the page to really engage the reader before moving on to another. Then the ending came suddenly, without the properly anticipated investigation. It felt too rushed and, therefore, an unlikely story given the smallness of the community. A pity as, expanded, this could have been an immersing book. The excellent Michelle Babb, as always, reads with flair and breathes life into the several protagonists. The timbre of her voice and gentle Texan (?) accent are a pleasure on the ear. But even she was unable to make this more than a quick snippet of life from a small town in North Carolina.

There is a bonus two chapters at the book's conclusion, introducing another story, The Diner, and revisiting one of the characters who appears in The Pit Stop. As yet, I have no idea if this is a full novel or another short. If the former, I am tempted to try it as the taster had great promise, as, indeed, this book had, also.

Mystery + a Pinch of Paranormal = Interesting Read

I enjoyed the author's writing style and look forward to more of her works.

The narrator did a decent job with both male and female voices. I appreciate the fact that she wasn't over dramatic and that she didn't go overboard when trying to do a foreign accent. She brought the characters to life.

I received a free copy of the audio-book version of this publication from the narrator, Michelle Babb in exchange for an honest review.

    "Ghostly"

I honestly began listening to The Library first. I made it halfway through and realized there was a book that came before it. I backed up and then began listening to The Pit Stop. I found that it really didn't matter with either story because they can be read or listened to as standalone stories.

I think Carmen DeSousa did a fantastic job bringing these stories to life. I love that these stories are based on true events. The story has that it takes place in 1934 but I'm really curious to learn more about the events.

These stories are not going to have you scared if you're the type that can't take scary things. The stories aren't so much scary but tell events that happened years ago to 80 years later. Both stories are really worth the read or listen. This isn't the authors normal genre but she blows it away. You feel like she's been writing these types of stories all her life.

The narrator Michelle Babb did a great job in her telling of the story. I don't think I've heard anything by her before. She kept me immersed from start to finish. I look forward to Carmen writing more stories like these. Overall, a 5 star rating!

    "Engaging Mystery with Ghostly Elements."

Detective Gino Canale is a determined homicide detective. He has long suspected that his grandparents’ deaths were not natural. He has reoccurring dreams that point to murder and now he is smelling a pipe and hearing bells that should only be vague recollections of his memories of his grandparents and the diner known as The Pit Stop.

There is another death in a nearby jurisdiction that has similar pattern to the death of his grandparents. The local file on the twenty-year old investigation has gone missing. Gino dives in to help the neighboring homicide detective dig up clues to solve the current case and the cold case.

Gino is a natural and likeable character. The writing moves along well and I enjoyed the mystery and paranormal elements. This was a short sample but I would be interested in reading more by this author. I recommend this to mystery buffs who would like a quick read or listen.

Audio Notes: Michelle Babb does a good job with the narration, providing distinct voices and accents for the characters. The narration made this an extra enjoyable, quick listen.

I received this from the narrator for an honest review. My rating 4.25.

    "A short, entertaining mystery!"

This story is about a detective who has always wondered about the death of his grandparents. Now it seems that it's just possible that a current murder case he's working on could be tied to the death of his grandparents. Is it possible that they were murdered also?
He's on the hunt for answers!
Narration by Michelle Babb was very good.
