Publisher's Summary

Newlyweds Alice and Jake are a picture-perfect couple. Alice, once a singer in a well-known rock band, is now a successful lawyer. Jake is a partner in an up-and-coming psychology practice. Their life together holds endless possibilities. After receiving an enticing wedding gift from one of Alice's prominent clients, they decide to join an exclusive and mysterious group known only as the Pact.

The goal of the Pact seems simple: to keep marriages happy and intact. And most of its rules make sense: Always answer the phone when your spouse calls. Exchange thoughtful gifts monthly. Plan a trip together once per quarter. Never mention the Pact to anyone. Alice and Jake are initially seduced by the glamorous parties, the sense of community, their widening social circle of like-minded couples. And then one of them breaks the rules. The young lovers are about to discover that for adherents to the Pact, membership, like marriage, is for life. And the Pact will go to any lengths to enforce that rule. For Jake and Alice, the marriage of their dreams is about to become their worst nightmare.

Totally unbelievable yarn that was never really a story. Not sure what point the author was trying to make about marriage. Absolute tosh

This novel started well but went downhill around the middle. The ending was disappointing. I felt it could have concluded better.

"Interesting but not a book for everyone/me."

This book started off gripping and interesting and I got invested in the characters and the idea. It's written well and the Narator is good but the plot quickly gets uncomfortable and then deeply disturbing. I feel the need to finish it so I can hopefully get to a satisfying ending/closure but I am currently finding it very distressing to listen too. I won't give away too many details but if you find humiliation/degradation and abuse difficult to hear about then avoid this book. Reminds me of the "stanford prison experiment" or the Nazis. Not a book for me. As a movie It would be psychological thriller and an 18Rating.

Thought the book had an interesting storyline. I really enjoyed the fictional concept but could imagine how a good idea can evolve into something frightening due to greed and overblown egos.

    "This was an interesting book!"

This had a pretty unique plot - a newly married couple gets invited to become part of an exclusive club, designed to help keep couples married for life. The premise was really creative, and the author did a terrific job of building up the conflict. What's interesting about this book is just like any other cult or abusive relationship -- in passing conversation, you think, "How could they possibly get caught up in that?" But it's the frog slowly boiling in water scenario, and the author really knocked it out of the park with the build-up. The character development was outstanding, and the narrator was superb. I'm not sure I liked the ending, though. Not going to give it away here to spoil it, but all in all it was a pretty fun listen. I barely put it down... highly recommend for anyone who enjoys suspenseful drama.

Great concept, excellent execution. As I was reading it, I kept thinking it would make a great movie. I hope they do the book justice.

    "Great Idea - Awful Story"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

It wasn't time well spent - I kept waiting for the big pay off and it never happened.

Has The Marriage Pact turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, again, it was a great idea for a story, but it fell short - really short.

What does Tom Taylorson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

    He did a good job.

Could you see The Marriage Pact being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

I could see the idea of the story made into a movie or TV series, but a lot would have to be reworked.

    Any additional comments?

Don't buy it. It wasn't terrible, but it was frustrating that it could have been so good and it never was.

    "Excellent!"

I couldn't stop listening. Good writing kept me wanting to know what would happen next. Only bogged down a few times and got a little wordy in places. Even had some good advice mixed in. Highly recommended!

"What a good idea that was completely wasted"

The author had a great idea for a story but got lost with the characters. Alice and Jake were made to appear so stupid I felt no connection with them. It was as if the book repeated itself to be longer. The end was perhaps the worst cop out I've ever encountered.

    "Frustrating. Hopeless. Horrifying. Yet, Brilliant"
What did you love best about The Marriage Pact?

Love, marriage, and everything to do with this is the strange concept that determines whether or not you're alone for your whole life or find your soul mate; divorce is at an all-time high. Do you need this magical group that forces you to comply with everything a marriage entails and more? Not once did Jake waiver in his belief that he did not need The Pact. Jake's resolve and steadfast belief is what I loved best about the book.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Like with all three of Gillian Flynn's novels, I have never shouted more at a book than I did with this one. I, as the reader, felt hopeless and helpless, because the characters felt those two things and more. I will say that I was on the edge of my seat for most of this book. The dull moments were at a minimum and it gave new meaning to some messed up ways of acting in order to preserve marriage, at whatever costs necessary.

Which character – as performed by Tom Taylorson – was your favorite?

I'm going to have to say Jake, because of what I said in the first question above; however, I will tell you that there was one character (cannot recall his name) with had an Irish accent, who was in charge of "confessions" and interrogation. Although I hated EVERYTHING about who he was, he was performed incredibly by Mr. Taylorson and, if you decide to read this novel, I know you'll hate him as much as I did.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

All three words in the title of this review are my extreme reactions: I was frustrated, I felt hopeless, and I was horrified. I didn't cry, but I did laugh at the ridiculousness of what these delusional people were willing to do in order to keep this cult going. It was one of those reactions that makes no sense, but I just laughed and shook my head, thinking how the heck this could possibly be happening.

    Any additional comments?

The Marriage Pact is one of those books that you're going to love or hate--I know it'll have a strong reaction and some readers will be angry with my positive remarks. I can't tell you that everyone will love this, because it is STRESSFUL to the power of 10. I will say that if you liked "Gone Girl," "Dark Places," and "Sharp Objects" by Gillian Flynn, you will probably like this one. While I mention those books, The Marriage Pack is not as good as the three mentioned, but I'd put them in the same genre and I would say that it was ALMOST as good. If you end up hating it, I apologize for building it up so much; I just can't explain my gut reaction and not rave about Ms. Richmond's novel.

Can't say I loved it but it was good. Suspensful, and interesting. Anticlimactic ending though.
