Summary

A compelling thriller introducing a driven young detective trying to prove herself in the LAPD.

Renée Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing none as each morning she turns her cases over to day shift detectives. A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor. But one night she catches two cases she doesn't want to part with: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting.

Ballard is determined not to give up at dawn. Against orders and her own partner's wishes, she works both cases by day while maintaining her shift by night. As the cases entwine, they pull her closer to her own demons and the reason she won't give up her job - no matter what the department throws at her.

Usual quality from Michael Connolly but terrible narration....

I'm a huge fan of Michael Connolly and I have read every novel he has written. This is my first audible version of his work and it was absolutely terrible! The narrator was awful and it just didn't work. She had no "connection" and I struggled to get to the end.
Still love MC but in future I'll stick to reading...

Dreadful narrator

I imagine the story will be good but am only at chapter 14 so far as...
Struggling to cope with terrible narrator, who's breathless and dull voice is really so annoying. I'll have to finish book cos it's a Michael Connelly but won't listen again if same reader, ruining flow of story and my ability to concentrate.

Good story

Another good story introducing The new detective. However the story was spoiled by the very poor narration. It was very monotone and dull. I wouldn't listen to another book narrated by the same lady.

Promising story line - irritating narrator

What would have made The Late Show better?

I had to give up on this book after 2 chapters. I could not bear the narrator's monotonous delivery- completely devoid of expression or attempt at character. Such a shame as I love Michael Connelly. I'll have to read the book instead.

Would you be willing to try another one of Katherine Moennig’s performances?

Absolutely not!

No messing with this badass heroine.

The only thing I question is the narrator. She was obviously trying to channel the book's 'cool as' heroine but I found her delivery a tad too monotonous. Still really enjoyed Connelly's modern (on all levels) cop.

So Bosch's replacement is sorted.

Loved this new Michael Connelly book, this can be the start of a great new series.

This is the best book that I have purchased . The reading is smooth the story gripping. I'm really impressed.

the usual Connelly brilliance.

Fear not Connelly fans, Michael has rebooted his detective trope with a new hero. IMHO!! He's always written women well in his books, and this is no different, with a believable, sympathetic, flawed character, sharing with all his hero's a determination to work for justice above all else.
Trust Connelly to write a female cop better than most female writers.... she seems to have a complex past, which we'll hopefully get to learn more about.
I've no idea if this is the start of a series, but I certainly hope so.... :)
Also, a big thumbs up for the subtle handling of a transgender character, how Ballard doggedly refers to the character as 'she', (the transgender character's choice of pronoun) whilst an uncaring system persists with 'he', despite years of gender realignment surgery. It's not made a big thing of, but kudos to Mr Connelly for getting this right!!

I liked!

Not read/heard this author before. So a new one for me. However it got me gripped. Better still one you couldn't second guess as to which way it was going. Almost felt pity for the main character with a sadness too.
Would be interested to see more with this character
