Brilliant

I have been totally gripped by this novel, the story was very complicated and held my interest right through. The main character was flawed as they all seem to be in today's crime novels, but he elicited my sympathy rather than my irritation - I liked him.
The story kept me guessing until the end, and I hated putting this audio book down whenever I had to attend to something.
Saul Reichlin is as superb as ever, one of the best narrators on Audible in my opinion.

Seedy Amsterdam, murder, kidnapping, new detective

Always a pleasure to listen to a thriller by Hewson and narrated by Reichlin. The central detective, Inspector Vos, has sunk into depression at the failure to find his kidnapped daughter, Anneliese. However, a new rookie police woman from the sticks, revitalises the enquiry, and the chase is on. Inspector Vos is a thoughtful detective, and could be compared to Morse. Interesting detective duo. Immensely enjoyable story excellently narrated by Reichlin.

I gave up

I've enjoyed the author's Rome series so am surprised and disappointed that I was bored by this book. There are so many two-dimensional characters with unfamiliar names that I lost track of who are the criminals and who the victims inhabiting the various seemingly unrelated stories. I gave up about half-way when I started asking myself why am I perservering and moved onto another book that I'm finding much more engaging.

Saul Reichlin is a wonderful narrator with a lovely voice so I'm sorry to be giving up on this book.

Enjoyable and intriguing listen

I loved The Killing and bought this as a result. I was not disappointed. Saul Reichen is a great narrator and its easy for the listener to distinguish quickly between the characters. Nice to have Dutch names and places as a change from the usual Scandinavian ones too. I am going to continue my journey through the works of David Hewson.

Very Nice Twist at the End

Nice introduction to the supposed way of Dutch life. Rather leasurely approach to the investigation is at times irritating. However the consistency of the way in which each of the characters is built up is very satisfying. The ending is quite unexpected and at the same time satisfactory

Good but disjointed and hard to follow

I struggled with this one. On balance I enjoyed it and the storyline was very good but I kept having to go back and try and piece together what was happening. Maybe better read than listened to and perhaps the Dutch names were more difficult to ascribe to characters, making it harder to relate to. I wouldn’t put anyone off but you need to concentrate!

Average

Expected an exciting book from the author of the Killing, very disappointing. Didn’t hold my attention, story was disjointed and characters flat. Waste of a credit and didn’t finish.

Complex story

The plot is based on a previous story. I think this helped to confuse me, with so many characters and so much going on I struggled to finish the book.

Interesting Story with plenty of suspense..

Interesting Story but one I struggled to really get into and engage with the characters. Plenty of satisfying suspense and twists and a good ending.

The reading was good, although at times I did lose track of things but maybe that's me being distracted.

Well worth a listen .

A cracking good read

Two fabulous new characters three if you include Sam which I do! I thought Mr Hewson would find it impossible to improve upon his previous hero's I was wrong and I am delighted to be so. I have already put the next in the series on my wish list but it will be saved until I have time to savour it properly because if it is as good as this it will be impossible to put down. the Narrator has utterly NAILED it is they day.
