"Really struggling to listen."
Where does The Harry Starke Series: Books 1-3 rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Quite low in my list to be honest but not the worst.

The main problem for me is that it rambles, for instance you don't just meet new characters you get a two page rundown on what they're wearing, where they bought the clothes and why there's a stain on the shirt!

Harry himself is not particularly likeable, he's a womaniser and some of the comments on the women's appearances are straight out of the 70's, they actually made me cringe in places; the narrator didn't help either, but more on that below.

Hoping it improves as I'd really like to have found a new crime series to listen to and the plot ideas are there but...

Would you recommend The Harry Starke Series: Books 1-3 to your friends? Why or why not?

No I'm afraid not, only because the first book and the narrator are so cheesy.

What didn’t you like about Tom Lennon’s performance?

I have to say his performance is at times quite wooden, almost as though he's reading it a word or two at a time with no expression to speak of.

I've been spoiled recently as been listening a lot to Scott Brick, Ray Chase and Jeff Harding and they're very hard acts to follow, but even so it is pretty bad.

I see the rest of the series are narrated by the same guy, this made me very sad and I'm not sure I'm going to be able to continue.

I'm pushing on but the robotic performance is really starting to get to me!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Not so far, certainly not the murders of his daily conquests, yawn.

    Any additional comments?

I'm afraid the narrator reminds me of my husband reading to our children at bedtime in the early 80's, it worked a treat as it sent them to sleep within a few minutes. The same thing is happening to me!

"I'm a new Harry Starke fan!"

This is one of the best values I have ever gotten on Audible. Harry Starke is an interesting character -- part bad ass -- good guy-- and great detective. The novels all have a classic detective flavor similar to "Mike Hammer" "Spenser" or other classic detectives. The plots are in depth and pretty sophisticated --not the usual run of the mill detective stuff. His supporting staff and investigative partners (like Kate) are well developed and referenced in each novel. Sometimes I just like a good who-done-it novel and this is perfect! Three novels for 1 credit is a great bargain.

    "New Detective Classics!"
What made the experience of listening to The Harry Starke Series: Books 1-3 the most enjoyable?

While the location is modern day Chattanooga there is something about these books that take you back to the very best days of Raymond Chandler.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Harry Starke Series: Books 1-3?

Finding the body in the bath tub in Book 1

Which character – as performed by Tom Lennon – was your favorite?

Harry. He becomes Harry and you forget you are listening to a narrator at all.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Each individual book, yes.

    Any additional comments?

Will be moving on to the next books in the series now.

    "Hard to put down"
Would you listen to The Harry Starke Series: Books 1-3 again? Why?

Sure, Interesting to see how even though Harry is a fully developed character right from the beginning of book 1, he definitely grows and fills out in each subsequent book. Actually gets even more likable.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Three good plots though Hill House was my favorite.

    Which scene was your favorite?

The finale of Hill House is great!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

    The Spencer of Chattanooga!

    Any additional comments?

The narrator does a really great job. Being all in the first person he really is like listening to the real Harry tell of his adventures.

"Stories got better as characters were fleshed out"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

No. I don't know anyone else who listens to audio books. Their loss, I know.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

I like a great mystery and these were not complex situations but what I enjoyed were the meetings of the minds which went over and over the aspects of the cases and came to a conclusion. Not tingly but just a very enjoyable listen during our summer monsoon storms here in AZ.

What does Tom Lennon bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Lennon's accent is great. I have never visited the deep south but I have read that the accent is a little Brooklynish and he added that to his narration. His Jamaican accent could be improved though.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    Relaxing in an intellectual way.

    Any additional comments?

Ordered the next set. Can't wait to see where the characters go from here.

    "Great Series!"

I purchased Harry Starke #1 a while ago and loved it. I went to buy #2 and found this set of 1 - 3. I could get #2 & #3 that meant for just one credit. If you have not bought #1 yet, this is an even better deal.

All three books have completely different plots and can be read as stand alone books, but they are even better if read in order. Harry is maturing, becoming more complex and growing up in many ways. In #1 he tends to jump a little too much from bed to bed, and in #3 he is completely settled in with the girl of his dreams for example.

The narrator is the same for all three titles which is fine with me. He does a great job of becoming Harry Starke. Being written in the first person if he didn't make the character as real and completely genuine as he sounds the books would not be near as enjoyable.

I will be buying the next set which is also available with books 4 - 6.

    Long live Harry Starke!

    "Good reads but predictable"

If you like good mysteries, this is an enjoyable Read/Listen it is entertaining although the story line felt predictable. I you are looking for a Harry Bosch or a Jack Reacher this is not the story for you, but if you can relax and enjoy a well written mystery with good characters this is great book.
I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.
Note: When selecting books to read or listen to for reviews I try and select authors and stories that interest me. Sometimes I am fortunate and other times not so fortunate. Either way, I try to review the books with integrity

    "Terrible narrator (Tom Lennon)."
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Better narrator. This guy has a fake southern accent that is so irritating that I could not finish even the 1st book.

What could Blair Howard have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Faster moving to the point of the book. The description makes it sound like a fast paced action packed adventure and it is anything but that as far as I could make it in the book due to the terrible narrator.

How could the performance have been better?

Better narrator that seemed to be closer to the age of the character. This narrator sounds like he is in his 80's rather than thirties or forties like you expect the character to be.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Harry Starke Series: Books 1-3?

Could not finish the book, so have no idea on this.

    Any additional comments?

Change narrator and I may try a Blair Howard book again.

"A Boston accent for a Chattanooga, TN. P.I.?"

OH MY GOSH.....I do not mind the accent, but for the main character, it is TERRIBLE. People in Chattanooga, Tennessee do not sound like ANY of the characters in this book. I was born and raised near Chattanooga (the reason I started the series,) But this reader makes the great story really hard to listen too. Even saying "ain't" sounds contrived by this reader. Please redo these books with a reader with either no accent or a southern one! ARRRRRUUUGGGGGGHHHH...

    "Couldn't get past poor narration."

Unfortunately I couldn't get into the book. It was difficult as the narrator read with the same tone and inflections and poorly attempted different accents or voices. I turned it off when his attempt at an accent of a Jamaican office assistant came off as someone of Asian decent with broken English. Really disappointing. I am sure the story is good, I just couldn't get into it audibly. I may have to buy and read it myself.

    "Harry Starke"

The teaser is what got me, even though I didn't like the narrator I thought it might get better. It didn't, I'd bought the book and didn't want to return it because I was getting a deal, pay for one and get three.
The storyline was interesting enough, I just couldn't get passed the dull narration. Every character sounded the same and there were places in the book where the narrator must have taken a break and then come back because his voice would be an octave higher before settling back into his original dullness.
I don't think I will listen to another Harry Starke book unless there is a different narrator
