Summary

When John Sutter's aristocratic wife killed her mafia don lover, John left America and set out in his sailboat on a three-year journey around the world, eventually settling in London. Now, ten years later, he has come home to the Gold Coast, the stretch of land on the North Shore of Long Island that once held the greatest concentration of wealth and power in America, to attend the imminent funeral of an old family servant.

Taking up temporary residence in the gatehouse of Stanhope Hall, John finds himself living only a quarter of a mile from Susan, who has also returned to Long Island. But Susan isn't the only person from John's past who has re-emerged. Though Frank Bellarosa, infamous Mafia don and Susan's ex-lover, is long dead, his son, Anthony, is alive and well, and intent on two missions: drawing John back into the violent world of the Bellarosa family, and exacting revenge on his father's murderer - Susan Sutter.

Soap opera

I did really enjoy this, it was an easy listen with characters I could care about. It was witty and well written.

Nothing really happens though! That’s why I say it’s like a soap opera. It’s just the trials and tribulations of daily life although with people who add more than a dash of violence and a huge pinch of the entitlement which great wealth seems to instil.

Jeff Harding was excellent. Even his females whom, I’m sorry to criticise, are usually given the voice of not too smart adolescents who just “hate boys”. There were several different female accents in this and they were much better. Although, often, his females speak so quietly that I have to increase the volume dramatically causing me to jump out of my skin when a male character speaks! First world problems!

Ultimately a love story

This book was long and may be a little repetitive when John was ruminating but it was an enjoyable story with twist of monster threats and horrible in-laws. Often funny

enjoyable

Good yarn , welll read.
I was irritated by too frequent use of " she informed me" rather than "she said". An odd use of words more obvious when heard than read.
