Summary

It started with a child's letter. Psychologist Karen Wiley thought she understood moral dilemma. Now, somewhere out there, an anonymous child has begun to cry for her help. The letters keep coming...and then something far, far worse.

Until the terror in the Trueblood trailer, police chief Ella McCullers believed she knew crises of faith. Abruptly promoted to senior investigator in the state's most high-profile kidnapping case, her only leads are a decaying tombstone, a missing cat and a little mute girl with ghastly nightmares.

In truth, it began with The Cult of the Final Days. Now Karen Wiley must cross the desert Wilderness to play a deadly game disguised as a righteous quest for the truth.

Don't open the mail

A couple divorce, and their daughter is befriended by someone online, the same time as the mother is getting threatening letters through the mail. The story gets a bit disjointed from here, focusing on different characters and timelines when you expect it to be going elsewhere. The cruelty to a child was particularly offputting so it only gets three stars.
