Summary

'My name is Ruby. I live with Barbara and Mick. They're not my real parents, but they tell me what to do and what to say. I'm supposed to say that my bruises and black eye came from falling down the stairs. But there are things I won't say. I won't tell them I'm going to hunt for my real parents. I'm going to be with my real family. And I'm not going to let Mick stop me.'

Critic reviews

"Kate Hamer's novel is both gripping and sensitive - beautifully written, it is a compulsive, aching story full of loss and redemption." (Lisa Ballantyne, on The Girl in the Red Coat)
"Moving, convincing and completely compelling. I read through the night, desperate to know the little girl's fate." (Erin Kelly, on The Girl in the Red Coat)

Just didn't get it

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Maybe this is one of those books that would be better written down, but the audible version was rambling and incoherent and I'm afraid I gave up after 10 chapters.

Unusual and entertaining

This is a very unusual and touching story that keeps your interest throughout. It is well read by someone who is very plausible as a young girl. I really enjoyed it.

Beautifully haunting

As always Kate's writing is a joy. The voluptuous way she can describe a scene without ever losing pace or plot is just wonderful. The plot is gripping and at times terribly upsetting, but the book overall is uplifting. Themes of love and loss, and how not everything is at it first seems. There is a supernatural undercurrent, and a plot twist just after half way through made me gasp. My favourite character was Lewis Black. But each character is well rounded, believable and deep. A brilliant book. Also check her others.
The reader made a couple of odd slips but otherwise very listenable.
