afternoon delight

read the book 25 years ago. saw the film with Edward Fox and Michael Lonsdale at least that many times over the years, which makes me a veteran consumer of the plot. listening to the audio version - the narration is commendable - along with some fine wine, during two consecutive summer afternoons, left me in the state of blissful contentment. on the other hand, it's an intoxicating story of a "lone hunter" who almost made it. now that is good entertainment!

Classic French political thriller

Verified Purchase

Despite being 40 years old, this book about a right wing French terror group's plot to assassinate Charles de Gaulle is extremely readable. The terror group (called the OAS) have taken this action because they believe the removal of de Gaulle will lead to a president (and government) more in tune with their pro-empire, hard line views. To aid them (after 6 failed attempts themselves), they hire the Jackal. The reader gradually drew me into the book which was really enjoyable to listen to at bedtime. I've seen the film a few times, which is very good but the book is par excellence.

The writing is good too. You might think it'd be dated, but it doesn't feel that way. It can be precise in places, but it helps the stop rattle along, which is always a good thing for a thriller. Highly recommended

Another winner from Mr Forsyth

Brilliantly conceived. Expertly woven tale of an assassin and his detailed plan. Quite different from the film. This book is compelling, as you’ll discover when you begin to read or listen to it.
