Summary

The sun rides high over the British Empire and the light still sparkles brightly in Amelia Peabody's eye as she returns for her second adventure in archaeology and romantic mystery as recounted in her lively journal, The Curse of the Pharaohs.

It was Sir Henry's intention to ensure that no tomb had been overlooked in the previous expedition. Scarcely had the men been at work for three days when their spades uncovered the first of a series of steps cut into the rock.

The Times gave the story a full column, on page three. The next dispatch to come to Luxor, however, rated front-page headlines. Sir Henry Baskerville was dead. He was found next morning stiff and stark in his bed. On his face was a look of ghastly horror. On his high brow, inscribed in what appeared to be dried blood, was a crudely drawn uraeus serpent, the symbol of the divine pharaoh.

Instead of digging up the treasures of a lost age, it appeared that Amelia and her friend Radcliffe were excavating a deadly curse.

Having been hooked, I couldn't wait to listen to the next book in the series. Another good and story read by a great narrator.

What a pleasure!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would if they were after a cosy crime series and wanted a good chuckle too.

What did you like best about this story?

I love how Barbara Rosenblat brings that era back to life by the way she reads those characters. The upper class accents are spot on! But I also love the setting in Egypt, it makes me regret that I am not an Egyptologist and makes me want to visit the country more than ever!

What does Barbara Rosenblat bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

A huge part of my enjoyment of this series is Barbara Rosenblat's narration! What an utter pleasure she is to listen to! I cannot commend her enough! Wonderful!

Wonderful story told well

I loved this story which is told beautifully by Barbara Rosenblat. She manages to get a really good upper class English accent with just the right sarcastic inflection for a good put down where required. In fact all the accents are good (apart from the Irish, which wonders a bit from Belfast to Berlin).
The story has just the right amount of historical accuracy with lots of nods to real characters and situations of the time, which make it very believable, but overall it's great fun. If you enjoy a more acerbic Miss Marple who is not afraid to get her hands dirty Amelia Peabody is for you.

Nostalgic adventures

This is the second in a series of Amelia Peabody stories, mostly set in 19th Century Egypt. They are charming and well-written nostalgia. This one involves a possible mummy's curse, several deaths, and danger for our intrepid heroine and her husband. Barbara Rosenblat does an excellent job with the voices of all characters, particularly with the upper-class English accents, only occasionally slipping-up with a modern American pronunciation. Easy-listening and entertaining, recommended.

A cozy whodunit

2nd outing with Peabody. I found her less irritating this time, which is a positive. The bodies pile up and Emerson and Peabody dual to be the first to discover the culprit(s) Narration excellent once again, differing accents handled well. I felt there was less wit employed generally which was a pity. My sleuthing on this one proved correct not sure whether that is a good thing or not.

Marvellous

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. It's quirky, interesting, with appealing characters. The Egyptian and archeaeology detail is fascinating, the plot clever, and exciting. And it's very funny indeed, to the point of laughing aloud often.

What other book might you compare The Curse of the Pharaohs to, and why?

There's nothing quite like it, except of course her other Amelia Peabody books.

What does Barbara Rosenblat bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

She expresses the characters splendidly with the different voices she brings to it. I am so impressed, she's a one-person dramatic performance; her Amelia voice expresses the very quirky temperament of this lady, her male voices are totally convincing and easily distinguished, her Egytian voices too, her different accents are excellent, and her young Ramses is just perfect, and utterly hilarious.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If it was one's first reading I think yes, but for myself, the answer is not at all, it's so wonderful I wanted to spread out the experience as long as possible.

Any additional comments?

I had read all the books, and loved them before finding the audiobooks, but Barbara Rosenblatt adds a dimension to the experience that I couldn't have imagined. She's fantastic. They are all good, but I am particularly fond of the ones which feature the child Ramses.
