Publisher's Summary

When the body of a young woman is discovered in a derelict cottage in the middle of Los Angeles National Forest, Homicide Detective Robert Hunter finds himself entering a horrific and recurring nightmare. Naked, strung from two wooden posts, the victim was sadistically tortured before meeting an excruciatingly painful death. All the skin has been ripped from her face - while she was still alive. On the nape of her neck has been carved a strange double cross: the signature of a psychopath known as the Crucifix Killer.

But that's impossible. Because two years ago, the Crucifix Killer was caught and executed. Could this therefore be a copycat killer? Or could the unthinkable be true? Is the real killer still out there, ready to embark once again on a vicious and violent killing spree, selecting his victims seemingly at random, taunting Robert Hunter with his inability to catch him?

Hunter and his rookie partner are about to enter a nightmare beyond imagining.

"NOT X-Files' Chris Carter. Immensely disappointing"

Firstly - Audible have listed X-Files under 'by the same author'. The author's own website show's its NOT the same person. I've only ever had good experience with Audible so I suspect this was laziness rather than deliberate but please, Audible, find some way of un-linking this as this served as an endorsement that it shouldn't have.

Secondly - the book itself. Some readers have left fantastic reviews but I found this a very disappointing read. Hunter (The hero of the piece) was just too good to be true; Garcia, his obligatory rookie partner existed solely to (Very mechanically) enable Hunter to demonstrate his brilliance. Conjured images of 60s TV series of Batman - several times Garcia may as well have thumped his hand in realisation and let out a "Holy crime solving Hunter."
Formulaic, predictable, unsophisticated. Reminiscent of Blue Book 2: Watch Peter Jump. Gave this one star only because I couldn't work out how to give it no stars.

    "Disappointing"

A good plot, written to an average standard and with weak dialogue. The reader made the best of a bad job.... It was still a bad job.

    "A great start"

I've read Chris Carter out of order over and over. This is a great introduction to a superb team with the best grisly imagination on the planet.

    "great read"

a gripping story. not to over gory but just enough to make you visualize what your being told. loved the twists and turns. thought I worked out who was doing the killings many times but kept changing my mind. Well written and can't wait to listen to the next one. highly recommend

    "Exciting serial killer page turner"

I hate gory books, I'm not keen on books set out of uk. But this author was hyped up so much I felt I needed to give him a go. I'm so glad I did! This story was fast paced and thrilling, with no extraneous descriptions or long winded explanations. I can't wait to read the next one!

    "The Crucifix Killer"

I was looking for a new crime series and came across this. I believe it's a first novel by the author and it shows as it's a bit rough around the edges. The story it's self isn't bad but it's nothing special, not edge of the seat stuff. Too many loose ends.

Some of the descriptive narrative seemed to be amateurish and cliched but again it's a first novel. The characters are shallow and it didn't root for any of them and the twist at the end ,for me, was apparent.

Although it wasn't the best I'm keen to know how the author continues to bring the characters to life in the following novels so I've invested in the next one.

Thomas Judd did a great job narrating.

It’s a hard, sadistic listen but a good story with solid characters. I’ll listen to the next one.
