Summary

Paul Tremblay, critically acclaimed author of Disappearance at Devil's Rock and A Head Full of Ghosts, adds an inventive twist to the home invasion horror story in a heart-palpitating novel of psychological suspense.

Seven-year-old Wen and her parents, Eric and Andrew, are vacationing at a remote cabin on a quiet New Hampshire lake. Their closest neighbours are more than two miles in either direction along a rutted dirt road.

One afternoon, as Wen catches grasshoppers in the front yard, a stranger unexpectedly appears in the driveway. Thus begins an unbearably tense, gripping tale of paranoia, sacrifice, apocalypse and survival that escalates to a shattering conclusion, one in which the fate of a loving family and quite possibly all of humanity are entwined.

The Cabin at the End of the World is a masterpiece of terror and suspense from the fantastically fertile imagination of Paul Tremblay.

Narration is just awful

Honestly the worst narrator I’ve experienced with Audible. Perhaps it’s a little unfair as the narration was so awful I couldn’t really give the story a chance.

Dreadful voice.

Could not finish the book and only managed 1 chapter because the narrator's voice was boring and not very clear. I'I'm sure the book is riveting and will have to actually read it instead.

very annoying narrator

The narrator has a bad habit of bringing her pitch down at the end of each sentence. It makes you feel as if each sentence was recorded separetly.
I had to force myself to endure her reading to get to the conclusion since the story itself was very interesting and suspenceful. SPOILER ALERT..... Ultimately I could have saved myself the hassle since this is one of those make up your own meaning or conclusion endings... I was dissapointed and frustrated with that... I hate it when you are left hanging at the end of suspence novels or mysteries.

Terrible narration

I'm not normally so quick to judge a book, I only made this a part way in, but felt compelled to stop listening and write a review.

My wife is reading the book and I've started reading it too, it is excellent. Unfortunately though, the audio version is well and truly ruined by terrible narration. The lady narrating has a monotonous and lifeless voice, and makes no effort to change tone when reading vocal parts for the different characters. It makes it mind-numbingly dull to listen to, and difficult to follow as conversational sentences just blur into each other. I'm not normally so negative and enjoy different narrators happily, but I just couldn't stomach this one ruining what is an exceptional story.

Such a shame. My advice - pick a different book on Audible and save this story for when you have time to read it yourself.

Narration does not suit story

The monotonous, robotic delivery spoiled it for me. I could not focus on the story.

should have been shorter

Talented writer. But i feel this story would have been better at half its length

Disappointing

I saw the movie and thought I'd get the book, as it's usually better than the screen adaptation, and I'd read and enjoyed "A head full of Ghosts" by the same author. I was very disappointed when I realised that the film was better. Without spoiling it, the strangers that arrive feel only half-developed (bar one); they should either be a mystery or explored in more depth for this to work. The writing gets repetitive in places, where it's obvious that it was a writing choice to create urgency, but it's done for too long. These are not the only issues, but revealing what's the main issue for me would be a spoiler. I'm guessing now that it's probably just this author's style.

Even though the narrator gives a different voice to each character, which is great, sometimes she makes some sentences in the dialogue sound like narration, and that gets annoying, especially since it's throughout the whole book.

I wouldn't recommend this book.

Narration well off

A very stilted book badly composed especially towards the end. And the narrator was well out of her depth. Far too monotone and unable to present feeling. Not a good story. Not a good narrator. The movie was strangely much better.
