Dublin, Ireland and Richmond, Virginia: separated by thousands of miles - linked by murder. Five dismembered, beheaded bodies were found in Ireland five years ago - now four have been discovered in the States. But the tenth corpse in Virginia is different. A copy-cat killing. Ghoulish, perhaps, but not unusual. Then abject terror grips Scarpetta and her colleagues when the next body is found with a clear and horrifying message: the killer is armed with the most lethal weapon on earth - smallpox.
Deputy Chief Virginia West likes her boss. But when a number of visiting businessmen are murdered in her city by a maniac with a penchant for painting his victims bright orange, she objects to his edict that a rookie reporter accompany her on patrol.

The new Kay Scarpetta novel from the world's number-one best-selling crime writer. In Alberta, Canada, an eminent paleontologist disappears from a dinosaur dig site, and at the Cambridge Forensic Center, Kay Scarpetta receives a grisly communication that gives her a dreadful reason to suspect this may become her next case. Then, with shocking speed, events begin to unfold.
A body recovered from Boston Harbor reveals bizarre trace evidence hinting of a link to other unsolved cases that seem to have nothing in common. Who is behind all this? And whom can Scarpetta trust? Her lead investigator Pete Marino and FBI husband Benton Wesley are both unhappy with her because of personnel changes at the CFC, and her niece Lucy has become even more secretive than usual. Scarpetta fears she just may be on her own this time - against an enormously powerful and cunning enemy who seems impossible to defeat.
I have been a fan of Patricia Cornwell and the Scarpetta novels since they were first published, and have read them all. I joined audible and found the latest novel available, downloaded it and was quite looking forward to experiencing a tale with energy, character and complexity.
Accepting that the book would not be in the internal voice that I am used to, when reading a paper copy, and having had some excellent experiences with audio books, I was raring to go.
Getting used to the narrator took some time, the narrators tone was rather flat, although not to the point of being completely monotone and often seemed mechanical in the pronunciation. Apart from the voice changing to a more masculine tone for Pete Marino, the narration often led me to think I had switched on the narration function of my Kindle!
The story lines were pretty weak, and predictable and crossover for explanation and linking poor. The finale - a disappointment.
I wont be buying another audible Scarpetta novel, or anything else by Patricia Cornwell, as she seems tired and the book is lacklustre. I will also remember that narration by Lorelei King is definitely not for me.

Enjoyed this audio book whilst on holiday in Turkey. Cornwell is definately back to her best in this gripper, Great plot, well written and had the depth I have missed in some of her more recent novels.

Much better than other recent works by same author. Getting back to the quality of storytelling in her early books.
Well narrated as usual by Lorelei King...

I've read or listened to all the previous books but this is the first one I struggled to motivate myself to keep on listening. All seemed very rushed at the end and seemed very slow throughout. No issues with the performance.
This is the first time I’ve listened to a Scarpetta book, in the past I’ve read them......big mistake, the narrator is awful and so patronising in her delivery. I got as far as 15 minutes in and can do no more.......utterly horrendous I tried to give it no stars but audible won’t let me do that!
thses book are amazeing get as many as you can tgeres a lot but all well wote griping intresting some terrorfireing you get involed woth the cartors
I enjoyed the story. The pace and content held ones attention throughout the book.
Lorelei King an excellent narrator.
Hated the narration accent and style of delivery- terrible characterisation. Story good ending disappointingly unbelievable
great book (as ever from Patricia Cornwell) very well read and easy to listen to.
Although, the narrator was good, I felt the whole story itself, was too much of science, not much on reality.
Slow drawn out storyline with the usual frantic finish. Not the worst book in series.
I cannot fault this book, but I must be honest.. I was a little bored. maybe I've had too much of Kay Scarpetta.. blah, blah, blah..... I didn't finish it, but probably will go back t it once i'm over my boredom. If you are an avid Scarpetta fan, then by all means read this one!
