Summary
Geoffrey Staddon turned his back on the best things in his life. He turned his back on the beautiful house Clouds Frome, his finest achievement as an architect. He turned his back on the woman he loved, Consuela Caswell, and who loved him in return.
Twelve years later, amidst the tatters of his career and marriage, he is forced to contemplate the remorse and shame of his betrayal. But when he reads that Consuela has been charged with murder, he knows instinctively that she cannot be guilty. And when she sends her own daughter to him, pleading for help, Geoffrey cannot ignore the dangerous lure of the past any longer. He must return to Clouds Frome and face the dark secret it holds.

Nasty.
If you like to read about vile people, being vile to each other and everyone else they encounter, this is for you. It's not my cup of tea'
This bloke seems to like writing sans charm, good luck to him and all who sail in him.
John Telfer is, as always, wonderful to listen to. He is one of the few that should be taught to the many, before they dare to impose their nasal dribblings on an innocent public.

Long listen
This book suffers from the fact that the main character is not likeable. He is an idiot! He has all sorts of shortcomings and constantly makes stupid mistakes.
I wanted to know what happens at the end, but it took sooo long!
If he had had some redeeming features, it would have helped, but sadly he just lurched from one disaster to the next.
Not for me-the narrator did a good job, though!

More Twists than DNA
What made the experience of listening to Take No Farewell the most enjoyable?
The narrator sounds like the central character ought to speak and think; and voice is not irritating.
What did you like best about this story?
Great number of twists and best of all , a plausibility.
What does John Telfer bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
Time! I can listen whilst doing other things.
Any additional comments?
Goddard's imagination does not seem to have faded with time, in the way that some other great authors have become formulaic.

One of my favourite ever books
I love Stobbart Goddard books especially the earlier ones.
I must have listened to this 6+ times over the years and never got bored of it.
Still breaks my heart though!

Curate's Egg
Good in parts. Found the plot woolly and heavy going and so difficult to sustain my interest throughout although read well.

Hmmmmm
Any additional comments?
I cannot agree with the other reviewers. Goddard has written some excellent tales but this is not one of them. The main protaganist is a pompous, uninspiring, insipid idiot. Any misfortune is self inflicted, bad luck deserved and frankly he is almost impossible to warm to. I just kept listening to see what idiotic reaction he has to the turn of events. Frankly the denouement was a relief. Try Pale Battlions instead. 5 stars so the review doesn't get buried.

Take No zfarewell by Robert Goddard
This is an excellent book written by an obviously educated person.
The development of the plot always surprises and these surprises continue right up to the last page, I found it a fascinating listen, one of my best purchases. The plot is so original, so imaginative yet so believable.

Not his best
Having looked forward to this I was very disappointed, Without giving any of the plot away the protagonist is clearly odd. Self pitying and altogether a character that does not allow the ''reader'' to be on his side.
After so many excellent books this one was a let down all round.

Take No Farewell
Although this novel was really difficult to get into and I had to rewind it a few times, I'm glad that I persevered. It was really long listen though.
The narrator, John Telfer, was excellent and managed a range of accents with consummate ease.
