Summary
Geoffrey Staddon turned his back on the best things in his life. He turned his back on the beautiful house Clouds Frome, his finest achievement as an architect. He turned his back on the woman he loved, Consuela Caswell, and who loved him in return.
Twelve years later, amidst the tatters of his career and marriage, he is forced to contemplate the remorse and shame of his betrayal. But when he reads that Consuela has been charged with murder, he knows instinctively that she cannot be guilty. And when she sends her own daughter to him, pleading for help, Geoffrey cannot ignore the dangerous lure of the past any longer. He must return to Clouds Frome and face the dark secret it holds.

Draws you in
At first I found the over-writing intensely irritating. Robert Goddard uses 50 words when five would do, and crams every sentence with extra phrases to emphasise the drama.
And yet, after the first hour or so, I let the words wrap around me and I settled into his style. The narrator was excellent and I warmed to the whole thing.
I don't think I would read it again, but it was a highly enjoyable experience and it was worth the long wait for the truth and the final shock.

too Long Drawn out
The story is good but I lost patience with the 'hero' who makes a whole chain of unfortunate decisions and almost never fails to either act impulsively or fail to act when it seems he should! I lost sympathy for him and was impatient with the length of the book - far too long and could easily have been edited down without losing any of the twists.

Although this novel was really difficult to get into and I had to rewind it a few times, I'm glad that I persevered. It was really long listen though.
The narrator, John Telfer, was excellent and managed a range of accents with consummate ease.

Totally involved and riveted throughout.....
So eager to follow the outcome I even carried my audible player around with me. Desperate for the ending and epilogue, now am still stunned a few days later. Oh my goodness! Sorry, lost a star!
