Summary

Inspector Rebus Book 4

Gregor Jack, MP, well-liked, young, married to the fiery Elizabeth - to the outside world a very public success story. But Jack's carefully nurtured career plans take a tumble after a 'mistake' during a police raid on a notorious Edinburgh brothel. Then Elizabeth disappears, a couple of bodies float into view where they shouldn't, and a lunatic speaks from his asylum...

Initially Rebus is sympathetic to the MP's dilemma - who hasn't occasionally succumbed to temptation? - but with the disappearance of Jack's wife the glamour surrounding the popular young man begins to tarnish. Someone wants to strip Jack naked and Rebus wants to know why...

The naked truth

Over lockdown I’ve been listening to the Rebus books in order from the beginning (I came to them fairly late in the series and was immediately a fan). Strip Jack is the most enjoyable of the earliest Rebus titles so far. There’s a plausible scenario, a relatively linear plot, and - unusually - a slightly equivocal ending - not a tidy solution. The character list is lengthy but somehow it’s not all that confusing; the narrator’s talent for accents helps with easy identification. It’s the story of an MP caught in a brothel, and the consequences for his life and career. Rebus is in a relationship with doctor Patience Aitken, which is under strain as a result of his job. His bosses are just as irritating and overcaffeinated as normal. There are some wonderfully annoying and pretentious characters. It all gels together and to me felt like the least contrived of the first Rebus titles, with a dramatic ending that didn’t seem as forced as the closing moments of some of the earlier novels. It’s solid, enjoyable fare, and rattles along at a decent pace - I was never bored and my mind rarely wandered, which wasn’t true of all the predecessor novels. Rebus is on wisecracking form as his adventure takes him to the Highlands, away from his urban haunts and into the double life of a suave, successful politician - who seems to prefigure Blair. This is the novel where the franchise finds its feet - can’t wait to listen to the next one…

Not one of Rankin's best

As ever I seem to be in the minority with my opinion of this book. My imagination really wasn't captured by this story, the writing was OK and I love James MacPherson's voice, he narrates very well and is 'up there' among my favourites.
I just got a bit bored by the tale, the characters were all immoral, dishonest, or unbelievable and I had little interest in their lives.

Brilliant!

As beautifully written and plotted as always, and in places, laugh-out-loud funny. Brilliantly read. One of my favourite Rebus novels.

Hmmm...great narrator, not so great storyline

I love James McPhersons narration, in what would otherwise have been a slightly soporific storyline, he held my interest. This is the fourth of the Rebus books I’ve listened to, and the dullest, which is a real shame. Still, it won’t put me off. Onto book number five I go!!

Great story, terrific narrator.

I’ve struggled with novels on audible. I don’t want them to be turned into plays; I want them to feel like the author is telling the story, not the narrator is creating their own story. This was a great Rebus story, and the narrator made it feel like Ian Rankin was telling the story, just the way I would read it. Perfect!

five star rankin

Having read all the rebus books I thought I'd try them on audible, boy I'm glad I have. This is my third one and the best revisit so far.James MacPherson is just perfect as a narrator. This is one of the earlier rebus novels and what stands out on audible is how much dry humour their is in the book that I don't recall when reading it,I don't know if this is just down to the narration but it came as a pleasant surprise. It just goes to show how good an author Rankin is and what a brilliant creation rebus is

The first 4 covered !!!

Having seen an interview with Ian Rankin I decided I'd start from scratch and listen to the whole series. While enjoying this book similarly to the 3rd it is not as well narrated by Samuel Gillies as the first 2 done by James Macpherson (glad to see he is back for the 5th) the first 2 however the story is good with Rebus back in is familiar territory of Edinburgh which is beautifully invoked.

Overall it's OK.

Another Good Rebus Story

Ian Rankin gives us yet another good episode in the Rebus series of books.

This one has lots of twists and turns so you’re kept on your feet until the end.

I enjoyed the fact that alongside the crime storyline you get to find out more about Rebus himself. This is also the case with the other regular key characters. In the series you get to see how the characters develop from one book to the next.

Again I have to say James Macpherson is exceptional narrating the audiobook. He cleverly brings the characters to life, with a never ending range of voices and accents. It’s fair to say he has to be one of my favourite narrators.

I’m looking forward to the next audiobook in the series and hope we get further insight into what makes Rebus tick.

Funny but not my favourite so far

Loved the humour, and the narration’s very good. But the story was not quite as involving as some, I found the huge cast of characters a bit tricky to keep track of.
