Gothic horror from a mystery writer

Ronald Knox is famous for an essay in which he outlined 10 rules a fair play mystery should follow. He's also fond of deconstructing mystery tropes without straying from the spirit if not the letter of those rules. I'm scratching my head at whether the solution to this tale strays too far from his own rules but it's entertaining nonetheless. You'll find yourself hitting yourself for not noticing some aspects of the solution that in retrospect are screaming at you even if the whole answer isn't totally satisfying.
The character of the doctor steals the show, too well written for me to really judge the rest of the ensemble cast. The returning characters are true to form. It feels less like a mystery and more of an atmospheric Gothic horror through much of the listen-time.
