Summary

Fear kills - the fourth electrifying Kathryn Dance thriller by master of suspense and number-one best-selling author Jeffery Deaver.

One mistake is all it takes.

Busted back to rookie after losing her gun in an interrogation gone bad, California Bureau of Investigation agent Kathryn Dance finds herself making routine insurance checks after a roadhouse fire.

But Dance is a highly trained expert in body language: Her most deadly weapon is her instinct, and they can't take that away from her. And when the evidence at the club points to something more than a tragic accident, she isn't going to let protocol stop her from doing everything in her power to take down the perp.

Someone out there is using the panic of crowds to kill, and Dance must find out who before he strikes again....

Meandering, cliched, TV movie script

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Thin story, looks like a Troy Mclure TV movie plot, main character motivations are "just because I have to". Twists too facile and neat, daft love interest and annoying reveals of earlier conversations to progress plot.

Would you ever listen to anything by Jeffery Deaver again?

Nope

What aspect of January LaVoy’s performance might you have changed?

Too much gushing about the Dance Character and family

Did Solitude Creek inspire you to do anything?

Another excellent book!

I’d thoroughly recommend this book. Another great listen and great story and I like the romantic tie in too. I also love the narration by January Lavoy. She adds to the story so well.
Enjoy this excellent book. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

Jeffrey Deaver back on form after a looong absence

Looks like the ghost writers sat this one out and JD is firmly back in the saddle. He was truly missed !

Narration is excellent also - an inspired choice for a wide international audience.

Bravo

Gripping

A cracking page turner, beautifully written as always by Jeffery Deaver. Clear and sensitive narration is an added bonus.

A Subtle Dance with Adversity

I found this a strange thriller. It is technically accomplished and polished - I'd prefer to give a 3.5 score. Jeffery Deaver is a master wordsmith and employs plot twists and diversions with the slight of hand of a magician. The empathy with which he relates the inner and family life of his female protagonist is sensitive and insightful. I felt that I'd slipped into a Patricia Cornwell novel at times, what with the Vuitton shoes and hair accessories.

It's a matter of my personal taste. The emotional life of Kathryn Dance is centre stage in this story. The resolution of crime scenes and situations felt a little anti-climatic at times, like pulling a tangle of thread and it all comes to nothing. I preferred the detective work of the last Lincoln Rhyme thriller (The Skin Collector) and the previous Dance novel (XO). I wonder where Jeffery Deaver is taking the character of Kathryn Dance, and I missed her having Lincoln Rhyme as a cantankerous foil - but I've been enjoying Stuart McBride so I'm preferring my detectives a little more hard-boiled!

It is such a well written book and the performance is solid. I do feel daft giving it a low score but it's more to do with my preferences. This just hasn't caught my imagination, moved or excited me as much as some of the other excellent audio books I've listened to recently.

Ok but not one of his best in my opinion

I have read a number of this author's books & have always liked them but this is my least favourite so far (sorry). I think maybe a little too much narrative wasted on 'feelings' rather than letting the story jog on.
