Summary

Sabrina Compton's sheltered life is shattered when her beloved husband is brutally murdered. And though their home has been ransacked, nothing appears to be missing. Unable to face the memories the house holds, Sabrina flees to her great-grandmother's cottage on Gaffe Island, off the coast of South Carolina.

But the peace she tries to recover is crushed by the revelations of an intrusive FBI agent, and her life is forever altered by the weight of her husband's devastating betrayal. As a hurricane bears down on Gaffe Island, she discovers the killer is now after her.

Will Sabrina survive both the storm and the killer's rage? Will the presence of the FBI agent be enough to protect her? Or are the sins of her husband's past destined to destroy her, too?

A life solitary and barren.

An only child, Sabrina grew up timid and, after her mother's death, very lonely. Until she met Char!ie, the teacher of her economics evening class, 17 years her senior and, like her, lonely. Together, she completed Charlie just as he had rescued her. For seven wonderful years. And then he was murdered.

Returning after two months to the home they had shared during their life together, Sabrina is horrified to hear that, not only had Charlie's killer had not been arrested, but also the man she had loved and had believed loved her in return, was not the person she had thought him to be. And now her life also was in danger, her only hope an FBI agent she couldn't trust.

This is a good cat-and-mouse thriller, very atmospheric and with good characterisation: perhaps a little too good as, for this reader, the main protagonist grew increasingly unlikable as the story progressed. A.little less self pitying whining would have been preferred. However, the climax to the ordeals suffered was thrilling and completely engaging. Jan Kennedy's narration was excellent, adding emotion to the text and voicing each character individually. The pictures created in the reader's mind were clear and frightening. A book to be read somewhere cozy and warm.

My thanks to the rights holder of Sins of the Past, who, at my request, freely gifted me a complimentary copy, via Audiobook Boom. A good psychological thriller verging at times on horror.
