Summary

London is under attack.

People are dead. Many more lives hang in the balance as a group of highly trained gunmen storm the historic Lanchester Hotel on Park Lane.

The gunmen have given the government just five hours to meet their demands before they blow up the building. Shots ring out. Some guests panic. Others text their loved ones. Still more try to escape. All are united by one thing: fear for their lives. All - except one man who has information so dangerous that it must be kept safe - at any price.

Darkness falls. The gunmen become increasingly violent. One question is in everybody's minds. Will they survive the night?

Critic reviews

“The writing in Siege is tight and fast-paced, and the action comes thick and fast from the very first line, if you’re up for a bit of action, there’s plenty of excitement to be found here.” ( Trucking News)
"The master of the race-against-time thriller has pulled off another cracker with this tense tale of London under terrorist attack…it’s great, fast moving fun." ( Sunday Mirror )
"The author is one of Britain’s top thriller writers and his latest yarn is another page turner – pacy, violent and gripping" ( The Sun)

Wow! what a fast-paced thriller

I'd meant to listen to this book over a week or so but was so gripped by the story I kept returning to the recording eager to find out what happened next. I felt I was witnessing the siege in real-time as the events only span about 15 hours. There are twists and turns and surprises along the way and moral dilemmas for the characters to wrestle with. Paul Thornley's narration is excellent and help to jack-up the tension. Great stuff!

His best yet ?

Reading his novels out of sequence probably doesn't aid a balanced overview BUT this is an incredibly well put together storyline.

Paul Thornley is by some distance the best narrator for these types of books.

Highly highly recommended

Up all night

The disparate motivation and aims of the group that take over the hotel ( The Stanhope not The Lanchester for some reason) are a bit vague, but the shocking body count certainly isn't and Simon Kernick has done a tremendous job here. Having the action take place in real time over the course of one day works well and the pressure is piled on with unexpected twists and turns.
I went to bed at 11 one night intending to listen to just a little bit more and was still wide awake when the book finished four hours later.

Excellent!

My commute to work took longer than normal last week due to public transport issues but instead of berating being stuck on a bus in slow moving traffic, I willed the traffic to all but come to a standstill so that I could enjoy as much of Siege as possible before the daily grind at work began.

Siege is narrated by Paul Thornley. Paul Thornley is pure listening gold and if Paul Thornley has escaped your radar up until now then this is something you should immediately rectify.

Siege tells the tale of just another day in a top hotel in London except the day is far from ordinary and for the staff and guests of the hotel, it will be a day they will never forget.

Right from the get go, this book grabs you and doesn't let you go until 10 odd hours later, you are left bewildered and stunned. I almost felt I was there languishing with the other guests whilst chaos reigned all around.

I highly recommend Siege. I have no complaints about this book other than I have now finished it :( and I would have liked more background as to the whys and wherefores. Also an interview with the author would have been nice.

Gripping tale, wonderfully narrated

This is the first audio book of Simon Kernick's I have listened to, and it won't be the last. It tells the story of a hotel taken over by a group of terrorists, it was so brilliantly narrated by Paul Thornley that I felt that I was actually there and at times I was quite frightened. The story involves quite a few characters and tells of how their lives all merge together when staying at the hotel. A brilliant and gripping story. Thoroughly enjoyed.

Solid thriller

With twists and turns enjoyable despite the subject matter which is unfortunately relevant to today's society still

Better than some not as good as others

Not that many twists in this book but I have to say it's still kept you in suspense.

I really like the fact that you ended up siding with some baddies but not with other baddies. I didn't like the fact that all the voices merged into one another

Overall a good book and well worth the credit

Don't believe the hype...

I got this because it had 20 ratings of 5 stars. I have not read any reviews, because I couldn't access any. It's a fairly good story, but it is badly written and the narrator, though okay at the accents, only has one (mono)tone of voice. It is too easy to get distracted and miss great swathes of the story because of this. He also has some habits which get annoying when you pick up on them, such as ridiculously long pauses followed by quick intakes of breath before he starts again. Sounds finicky I know, but ten hours of this is enough to put anyone on edge. I used up my monthly credit on it, so I have to listen to it now.
