Summary
Could the sudden death of Sir Charles Baskerville have been caused by the gigantic ghostly hound which is said to have haunted his family for generations? Arch-rationalist Sherlock Holmes characteristically dismisses the theory as nonsense. Claiming to be immersed in another case, he sends Watson to Devon to protect the Baskerville heir and to observe the suspects at close hand.

Love it!
You know Sherlock Holmes. You've seen adaptations on TV, you know his stories. But, listening/reading the books is just wonderful. By reading, you gain a deeper understanding of Holmes, of Watson, of Victorian England and Derek Jacobi is an amazing narrator. He is perfect for the job. So even though you may be familiar with the stories, have a listen and instead of being preoccupied with 'who done it' (cos you probably know already), enjoy the journey and allow Holmes to lead you there in his own unique way.

Very entertaining
Excellent audiobook and excellent narration by Jacobi. I read the book many years ago and enjoyed it very much. However, listening the audiobook and the life and personality of the characters was like reading the book fir the first time.

Not quite elementary and not a good starting point for new Holmes fans
Derek Jacobi gives a pleasant performance but it is easy to drift off as he doesn’t give much variation to characters and voices. I’ve always been told that if you are start the Holmes books this is the one to start with and with my love of all the Basil Rathbone and Hammer versions of Sherlock and Watson I decided to dive in. The story is very slow with everything coming alive within really the last hour and Sherlock himself is absent through 70% of the story. I believe if you are already engrossed in the world of Sherlock Holmes you’ll really enjoy this but as a newcomer to the books I did struggle.

Feels like being on the moors!
Each character was excellently narrated! The narrator really brings the story to life and you feel like you are there on the mysterious moors with Watson and Holmes trying to figure out what's going on, recommended!

Diabolical desires and dastardly doings on Dartmoor
Holmes has encountered deadly creatures on his adventures before, most memorably in the case of the Speckled Band — when a swamp adder was revealed as the killer. There are some parallels with Baskervilles. But this is a novel, not a short story, and a fuller exploration of some classic Doyle preoccupations, including disputed inheritances, family loyalty, or more exactly disloyalty, and a suggestion of supernatural goings-on. Holmes is called to the desolate moorland of Grimpen Mire where he finds a kind of twisted version of Wuthering Heights - aristocrats and oddballs living in an inhospitable wilderness. Sir Charles Baskerville has been found dead, seemingly mauled by a spectral dog. His son and heir Henry travels back from Canada to take over the family pile — but soon it becomes clear he, too, is at risk from the devilish hound. It’s wonderfully done. Watson, forever in awe of Holmes, if sometimes a little grudging, is primary sleuth for a good portion of the novel, travelling to the moor while Holmes tells him he’ll stay put in London. Much of the action is narrated by Watson in the form of letters to Holmes, updating him on the latest revelations. It’s a great mix of myth and murder — and still has the power to hold your fascination, decades after it was published. The setting is key to the sense of growing dread. I read the novel as a child and still vividly recall the experience. It’s great to revisit it, and Jacobi’s narration is firm and faultless. Should you give it a listen? The answer is, of course, elementary…

Quite enjoyable
I really quite enjoyed this. I love listening to Derek Jacobi, although there were times when I was a little annoyed with the narration. The story is quite dramatic in places and the writing of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle does all the drama for you so that I found the narration a little over the top. Other than that, it was good to listen to and I would recommend it.

Brilliant
Derek Jacobi reads this story beautifully. I found I wasn't aware I was listening to a book as I was there on the moors in my mind.
Better being unabridged too.
