Summary

The 11th novel in the highly acclaimed Dave Robicheaux series.

When Detective Dave Robicheaux discovers disturbing secrets from his mother's past, he embarks on a journey through a murky world of vice, politics and murder.

Robicheaux has been told that his mother, Mae, was a hooker and ended her life drowned in a mud puddle by two cops working for the Mob. As Robichaeux and his partner hunt for the killers, they hook up with a door-to-door salesman turned state governor, a psychotic hit-man, and the owner of the mansion at Purple Cane Road - who knows rather too much about Robichaeux's wife....

Critic reviews

"James Lee Burke is among the finest of all contemporary American novelists." (Daily Mail)

"The gentle giant of US crime writers, Burke always ensures that his Louisiana detective Dave Robicheaux grapples with hot topics as much as with his own inner demons." (i Newspaper)

The vocabulary of the authors book is excellent as is the story.

I loved it all James Lee Burke is the best author I have listened to and the narrators are great adding to my enjoyment of someone who has a love of words

Not The Best Robicheaux

It’s difficult to find a narrator who does this justice other than Will Patton. Decent attempt here but this is one of the weaker novels in the series. I was glad when it was finished.
