Publisher's Summary

With the stakes so high, racing can be a deadly business...best-selling author Felix Francis' latest thriller!

Chris Rankin is a doctor, a specialist in emergency medicine at Cheltenham Hospital, but a doctor who also has health problems.

A smartly dressed man has been found unconscious at the local racecourse and is rushed to the hospital, where he subsequently dies. But who is he? Where does he come from? He had no form of identification on him, and no one claims the body.

Doctor Rankin is intrigued by the nameless dead man, obsessed even, and starts asking questions. However, someone doesn't want the questions answered and will go to any lengths to prevent it, including attempting murder. But no one else believes that someone tried to kill Chris, leaving the doctor no option but to discover who the nameless man is and why he died, preferably before following him into an early grave.

    "Frustrating"

Frustrating. Too slow to get going. By the time I'd got to chapter 17 I'd had enough and I fast forward to chapter 35. I feel annoyed at having wasted money on this.

    "Awful book"

Boring, depressing story that is only very loosely linked to horse racing. Difficult to like any of the characters, especially the main character who I found whiny and irritating. Too many americanisms even though it's set in England.

    "Disappointing"

I didn't like it. The story was unrealistic and silly. The first part was like reading a woman's magazine and I expected better from a mystery thriller. The lead character was written badly but the story did improve in the middle. Then the main drama bit was just stupid.

Not terrible but not up to the usual high standard. Hopefully the next will be a return to form.

Story OK, narrator OK but aggravated by use of American terms rather than English words.

    "Gripping!!!"

I started listening to this audiobook after being gifted it by a good friend who called it 'gripping'. I then looked at some of the reviews and wished I hadn't. I found true empathy for anyone who has suffered from depression. Never have I read (or heard) of a main character's true struggle in such realistic terms. I think some of the reviews have been left by very lucky people who have never suffered.
That said I thought this was a thriller truly worthy of the surname of 'Francis'. Well done Felix, your Dad would have been proud you have elevated an adventure/thriller into a new thought provoking realm.

I very much look forward to hearing more.

To anyone in two minds as to whether to buy this book (after seeing the negative reviews) I would say give it a go and try and empathise with the main cha rate instead of judging her. No wonder people having had 'mental health' issues feel there is a stigma attached if those reviews are anything to go by!

    "Interesting story with female protagonist"

This is a change to the normal 'Francis' racing book format. The centre character is a doctor and a woman. There is an element of the racing world as the story of her fight with her own demons as well as those that arise from a betting scandal unfold. As a fan of the 'Francis' stable of books I found this one a refreshing change and enjoyed loitering to it.

    "Not as good as usual"

Felix is unfortunately not in the same class as the original Dick Francis. Latterly the stories have contained too much important fact and that gets boring. The trademark Dick Francis was "catch them with the first sentence" followed by action, short sentences and a thrilling climax. This book had a lot of academic information which was quite convoluted and somewhat boring. The narrator irritated me beyond measure, she was too little girl prissy for a woman heading into her 40s with a responsible medical position, I cant imagine her kicking anyone anywhere but I guess she had to try. But, I generally dont like female narrators, they have difficulty with male voices (as did this one).

    "better than I expected!"

I was a bit unsure if I would like this one as it's a departure from the usual Francis formula. Ended up enjoying it more than I thought I would in the end though. I'd recommend giving it a go
