Publisher's Summary

The follow-up to the best-selling Heresy sees the return of Giordano Bruno, religious exile and renegade monk...

Autumn, 1583. As an astrological phenomenon heralds the dawn of a new age and Mary Stuart's supporters scheme to usurp Elizabeth, a young maid is murdered, occult symbols carved into her flesh. Giordano Bruno is called on to use his cunning to infiltrate the plotters and find evidence against them. In fear for his life, Bruno discovers that the young woman's murder could point to an even more sinister truth...

What the Critics Say

"Parris writes with confident ease of Tudor London... The dialogue balances nicely on a tightrope of period phrases and cut-to-the-chase colloquialisms. More, please." (Times)

"Impossible to resist ... Parris creates a convincing sense of the past, woven with so much intrigue that the head fairly spins" (Daily Telegraph)

    "Superb narration"

I love this period of history, first finding it in the faction of Shardlake. I must say that Laurence Kennedy does an absolutely superb job of giving the characters in the book a real presence. Well done.

    "Getting better as a series"

After a slow start in the first book, this story is a lot better and the characters seem to be hitting their stride, I was doubtful whether to continue, but glad I did, if you weren't overly impressed with book one, this is better

    "Superb story brilliant performance"

The story as always is wonderfully crafted however it is the reader that brings it life and Lawrence does just that with his marvellous array of accents dialects and intonation. I am very sad to find that the next book is not being read by him what a great pity.

    "No CJ Swanson"

Ridiculous bumbling characters the worst of whom is the hero who has utterly improbable relationships wherever he goes. Everyone speaks through clenched teeth. Melodrama at its worst

    "A pleasant read"

This was a pleasant, if uninspiring, listen. The characters are reasonable well developed and the historical context is excellent. As a 'whodunnit' it is a bit contrived and the main character more naive than his earlier lifestyle implies. Nonetheless it is easy listening and sufficiently engaging to warrant ordering the next installment.

    "Totally gripping"

The narrator really brings this book and its characters to life. So entertaining to listen to, I found it hard to put it down. This is the second book in the series and there is now a depth to the main characters and a brilliant story line with twists and turns. I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who likes mysteries set in an historical background.

"Very twisty plot but not totally unpredictable"

I really enjoyed all the characters and the plot twists, but I did guess one of the ultimate protagonists early on. Still worth a read though.
