Summary

A serial killer is on the loose in Richmond, Virginia. Three women have died, brutalised and strangled in their own bedrooms. There is no pattern: the killer appears to strike at random, but always early on Saturday mornings.

So when Dr Kay Scarpetta, chief medical officer, is awakened at 2.33 am, she knows the news is bad: there is a fourth victim. And she fears now for those that will follow unless she can dig up new forensic evidence to aid the police.

But not everyone is pleased to see a woman in this powerful job. Someone may even want to ruin her career and reputation.

An unabridged version would probably be better

The story is interesting and the reading enganging. However, the abridged version leaves something to be desired. I missed the details, the descriptions that would probably be in an unabridged version. Non the less I devoured it, like I do any mistery book.

just as i imagined her when I read the book

Lindsay's just the right narrator for Kay Scarpetta, pity she didn't do more than 2 books!

My first audible book

Have read some other reviews and think they are rather harsh. It's a great storyline and builds a picture of the main characters very well. The narrator does a good job in building the atmosphere. Will certainly listen to more

Disappointing

This is one of the most disappointing 1st novels in a series i've listened to. The story is weak and appears to start part of the way through a case The narrator added nothing to the enjoyment of this book - the attempt at voices was cringeworthy. If this is the best Cornwell can do I won't be reading the rest of the series. Q

Disappointing

I was looking forward to listening to this book as the author came to me highly recommended, and the story appealed to me. However, I couldn't help but be slightly disappointed. The narration I found to be quite good, with a clear distinction between characters and situations, but it kept being interuppted by bursts of music where there didn't seem to be a natural break in the story. The attention to detail and the forensic aspects of the story were excellent, and I was getting drawn in to the investigation. However, the ending was a let down, feeling a little rushed after all the build up of tension with the story.

A good listen overall, but not a classic of the genre.

Good story but flawed reading

The story is good but the narrator was excriciatingly bad at times. Very bad accents and unengaging voice.

Disappointing listen

Don't bother with the abridged version. It's very short, lacks the depth and development you would expect in a novel like this. I didn't feel emotionally invested, didn't care about any of the characters and found myself checking the audio to confirm that it was actually the end. It was rushed. I was expecting some twists or suspense but it never happened. It felt like the ending was pulled out of a hat with little build up to it, and it left me feeling disappointed.
Im sure the unabridged version would be good but defiantly don't bother with the abridges version.

Great buy

I have read all the Scarpetta books and really enjoyed them- but hearing Lindsay speak the words really enhanced the experience
