Summary

The daunting task that confronts Gurney, once the NYPD's top homicide cop: determining the guilt or innocence of a woman already convicted of shooting her charismatic politician husband. Gurney quickly finds himself waging a dangerous battle of wits with a thoroughly corrupt investigator, a disturbingly cordial mob boss, a gorgeous young temptress, and a bizarre assassin whose childlike appearance has earned him the nickname Peter Pan. But the identity of the villain at the mystery's center turns out to be the biggest shock of all....

Minor irritations make this one only 4*

I have enjoyed the Dave Gurney novels so far and I really like Jeff Harding’s narration, even though he is so firmly identified with the Jack Reacher novels, but in this one there were a couple of things that I found irritating.

The big one was the change in Hardwick’s voice which also completely changed his character for me. In previous books it’s true that the voice characterisation made him seem much older that the stated age in the book (39 I think), but the new voice makes him sound far less of a trustworthy and dependable rough diamond which is how I had pictured him.

The other thing that grated on me was the character of Dave Gurney’s wife, Madeline, who is so utterly wet and predictably prissy that sometimes I just wanted to slap her. In previous books there was a glimmer of hope that the relationship between her and Dave may become more collaborative, helping Dave to solve the mysteries using her great intellect and insight rather than continually whinging about everything.

Lastly, I am even more unhappy about changing the narrator completely in subsequent books and so I’m not sure I’ll listen to any more.

Love this series

Totally gripping. Great story with reflective insight shown by and through the characters. Can’t wait for the next.

Gripping Psychological thriller

Jeff Harding brings Dave Gurney and his co-worker and intolerable friend Jack Hardwick to life more and more as each book goes on. I would love to listen to the next 2 books in the series but I won't be. Jeff Harding must record Wolf Lake and the next book after it. Continuity is very important when you have built up a mental image of all the characters. Jeff Harding is also brilliant with the Jack Reacher book series. He tells the story so you feel like you are in it. A fantastic book that I was sad that I had finished it so quickly.

Dave Gurney overload

Loved the first three books but this one was one too many. Jeff Harding (who I really rate) lost the characters (especially Hardwicke) Dave’s wife became a total PIA. The plot was ok if a little too “fantastic “
Time for me to listen to something else.

Page turner with hero

Certainly up to usual standard and I love Jeff Harding's narration.
Also like the fact that relationships underpin the action.

Strong protagonists and plot, great narration

Top notch performance - the narrator has pitched the character voices really well without distracting ftom the story. This along with satisfyingly rounded characters and intriguing plot makes for a great crime genre listen. Some clichés perhaps but it's so well done, just enjoy the ride.

Good story

Well up to high standard. Just fed up now with whinging wife.
A bit long winded in parts and repetitive but good value re length of the book. Still engaging and recommended.
