Summary
In the peace and tranquility of the woods at Pinehills on a Saturday afternoon, a mobile phone begins to ring. The phone belongs to DC Smith, and it isn't unusual that the call is from Kings Lake Central police station; what is unusual is the fact that he seems to be the subject of an investigation rather than taking part in one. What can the links be between a prisoner's violent death in another county, the disappearance of two teenagers, and the highest profile case in Kings Lake for many years? As Smith and his team begin to untangle the threads, one thing becomes clear - they are dealing with some of the most dangerous people that they have yet encountered.

Meticulous and well-written
As the fourth of the series this volume might have been repetitious and forgotten about developing the characters. But it’s not. But nor is the investigation really the point of the writing, the exploration of the society of KL and the development of interesting characters is what makes this well worth reading. If you want adventure, read Andy McNab or other such rubbish. If you want an engrossing read then read Peter Grainger.

Ponderous
Story line is uninspiring. I could not bring myself to finish this book. This is a first for me.

Oh my goodness!
I was totally gripped from first to last... one of the most riveting and enjoyable audio books I have ever had the pleasure of listening to ... As a retired Police Officer I felt as if I was back on duty myself with the officers of Kings Lake as they fought the good fight!

Complex & Real
Although a complex thriller it felt like the reality many detectives must face, a fine listen.

Yet again I have really enjoyed listening to this story. The author, characters and narrator were great as usual.

Slightly antiquated style- reader and pace.
Precisely presented, slightly instructive but convincing plots, with the occasional sense of being ‘ told’, the compatibility of narrator and author obvious, and he is good at ‘ voices’, though murder is the subject, there is little mayhem, perfect for a gentle listen on a journey, and the every now and again
Mr Grainger gets quite poetic, some of his observations in the countryside, are specifically beautiful, to his surroundings, sounds and textures, authentic emotions, this applies to all four of the books- so far- hence the 5 stars.

Excellent
This is such a good series. The main characters are believable and more importantly are likeable. The story is complicated but mostly plausible and as I got the entire series via Plus I’m listening to them back to back. Happy happy days!
