Summary

One million dollars: that's what Harvey Metcalfe, lifelong king of shady deals, has pulled off with empty promises of an oil bonanza and instant riches. Overnight, four men: the heir to an earldom, a Harley Street doctor, a Bond Street art dealer, and an Oxford don, find themselves penniless. But this time Harvey has swindled the wrong men. They band together and shadow him from the casinos of Monte Carlo to the high-stakes windows at Ascot and the hallowed lawns of Oxford. Their plan is simple: to sting the crook for exactly what they lost. To the penny.

A Joy

A great story that I have read many times, made even better by Martin Jarvis's wonderful abilities.

Good grief: flowers $100. still owes $1.24 cents?!

Starts off very nicely and moves at a very rapid but engaging pace.
Halfway through though, the story becomes rather far fetched. I cannot help thinking that Archer wrote this book at least with the hope (if not the principal aim) that it would eventually be made into a movie. This is certainly not as good as Kane and Abel.
Martin Jarvis’s reading is merely adequate but his imitation of an American accent, which comprises a good portion of the book, rather rubbed me the wrong way. Nonetheless at only 4 hours this is quite an enjoyable short listen with a nice twist at the very end guaranteed to bring a smile to your face.

Tantalizing story with an absolute performance

Tantalizing story with an absolute performance from the reader. I had fun listening to it. The abridged version is not too long compared to the abridged which I had trouble and unable to finish it.

You'll enjoy this :)

A must have story.

This is my favourite Jeffery Archer audio story, I used to have this on cassette tape years ago and it was a must have been I started to get books from Audible. The story of have these men get there money back is ingenious and very clever with out them being cruel and nasty in the way they go about it. A very good and engrossing story, love it. As always Martin Jarvis tells the story fabulously.

Not a penny more not a penny, very apt

I was recommended to read this, the thing was, you can relate this story to modern happenings, I was not disappointed, Archer makes it all so plausible,

He is still one of the best novelist,s around.
