Summary
Making rounds to homes one wet spring morning, veterinarian Dr. Kate Turner rescues a family's hamster from a vacuum cleaner then visits an estate whose owners breed champion Cavalier King Charles spaniels. Instead of sharing traditional tea with the couple, she confronts a bloody scene of bodies and 27 blue-ribbon dogs running wild. Police initially suspect a murder-suicide, but when Dr. Kate proves the famous best-in-show champion is missing, a darker reality intrudes. She remembers her grandfather saying that there are two motives for murder: love and money.
While treating local pets, Dr. Kate discovers suspects and motives everywhere in this charming town filled with people who wanted the couple dead. Was the couple murdered for the money their champion could bring to another breeder? How is their daughter, anxious to rid herself of the pampered dogs, handling the wealth she inherits? Would the celebrity filmmaker living nearby kill to end a multimillion-dollar lawsuit? Did long-buried personal secrets cause the deaths? And what's going on at the office behind her back? Is Dr. Kate in danger?
First-time mystery writer Eileen Brady's characters, style, and storytelling bring authenticity and atmosphere in this new "pet noir" series.

keeps you guessing
I really enjoyed this story, I have listened to quite a few mystery books like this but you can always guess well before the end who done it, this one however although there are lots of suspects I was surprised at the end when you find out who was the culprit.
Being an animal lover and having 2 dogs and 5 cats I really enjoyed the story and the information about the different animals she's comes across, although I don't believe in breeding dogs and the whole show scene, (I personally rescue all my animals) I could still enjoy the story.
looking forward to listening to the rest of the series

Unleash this book
I enjoyed this book and am glad I discovered this series, in fact I had downloaded the next book before I even finished this one. It is a nicely balanced story of animal antics and mystery. The insight into what it takes to be a vet is fun and often lead to some light hearted humour. I normally wish an author would stick to the mystery side of a story but with this book I actually found myself wanting more quirky stories about the animals. I liked the characters but it was definitely the animals that stole the show, especially a clever parrot. Having said that the mystery was interesting with a lot of suspects and motives, I was no where near guessing who was responsible and it came as a surprise. Although looking back there was a number of clues to the identity. Off to start the next book.
Kate is filling in while the regular vet is jet setting around the world and Kate has to get use to a small town life style, Traveling to the patients homes mean you have to be prepared for anything but no body told her she needed to prepare to find two dead bodies and a house full of champion Cavalier King Charles spaniels. At first glance it looks like a murder suicide but Kate isn't so sure. As she goes about town doing follow up checks on her patients she can't help but ask questions. It seems the couple had a habit of upsetting or suing neighbours and friends. In fact they cared more about there dogs than they did about people. So who would have a big enough motive to kill them about? And is it connected to a shooting at a dog show, where one of there only friends is the victim?
I liked the narrator. She had a pleasant voice and made it fun to listen to the story.

Easy listen
Goes along at a reasonable pace, if you like animals this is for you. There are vet facts you might not know so quite informative.

Very, very slow and quite boring
Definitely struggled to finish. The last couple of chapters were a bit better, but really this would have been better as a short story or Novelette.

Good listening
A well crafted story, well written and not too wordy. Lots of possibilities before the outcome.
