Publisher's Summary

Francis Bacon is charged with investigating the murder of a fellow barrister at Gray's Inn. He recruits his unwanted protégé Thomas Clarady to do the tiresome legwork. The son of a privateer, Clarady will do anything to climb the Elizabethan social ladder.

Bacon's powerful uncle, Lord Burghley, suspects Catholic conspirators of the crime, but other motives quickly emerge. Rival barristers contend for the murdered man's legal honors and wealthy clients. Highly-placed courtiers are implicated as the investigation reaches from Whitehall to the London streets.

Bacon does the thinking; Clarady does the fencing. Everyone has something up his pinked and padded sleeve. Even the brilliant Francis Bacon is at a loss - and in danger - until he sees through the disguises of the season of Misrule.

    "Annoying characters "

I am not sure if it was the performance or how the characters were written, but I had a tough time with this book. Just didn't care if the murderer got all of them.

    "Couldn't finish it"

This is not for adults; adolescents might be able to appreciate it. If you are interested in the historical aspect, forget this series. If you are interested in the murder mystery aspect, ditto. The narrator plays it as very broad comedy in a highly affected British accent that makes every character sound the same. Makes it impossible to figure out what to blame on him and what on the author. Most of it is devoted to the antics of a group of junior lawyers at Gray's Inn, their quirky personalities and interests. Francis Bacon is a minor character, at least in the portion of the book I was able to listen to.
