Publisher's Summary

For defense attorney Samantha Brinkman, it's not about guilt or innocence - it's about making sure her clients walk.

In the follow-up to bestselling Blood Defense, Samantha is hired as the legal advocate for Cassie Sonnenberg after a brutal stabbing left her father and brother dead, and her mother barely clinging to life. It's a tabloid-ready case that has the nation in an uproar - and Sam facing her biggest challenge yet. Why did Cassie survive? Is she hiding something?

As Sam digs in to find the answers, she's surprised to find herself identifying with Cassie, becoming more and more personally entangled in the case. But when Sam finally discovers the reason for that kinship, she faces a choice she never imagined she'd have to make.

    "An excellent follow up"

This is no two in a series and as someone who doesn't really like series very much, I can honestly say I'm now converted. I can't wait to read the next...... however many.
This story if full of twists and turns. Ms Clark is a master of changing your mind for you! Did the sweet fifteen year old adopted daughter kill her family in cold blood, or didn't she? As Sam and her team work on this case and numerous others it seems, sometimes yes and sometimes no! The main characters in the books are developing nicely and the sub story which can't be mentioned without giving away the best twist ever, is also developing and growing into a book in its own right. Waiting now for more in the series!

    Story
"Samantha Brinkman series is a Winner."

This is another really good book, the second in the Samantha Brinkman series. In this book a family is butchered by an unknown, possibly a gang member. The only one untouched is the adopted teenage daughter. Throughout the book a horrible story of psychological and sexual abuse is revealed. Because Samantha is the young girl's attorney and she herself has a history of abuse at the hands of her stepfather, she is inclined to believe. As the story progresses more horrific acts come out. Are they true? Clark does a great job leading the reader/listener between two prominent characters and until you hear the last chapter you will not know who committed the crime.
Samantha is surrounded by a cast of colorful characters that really fill the story with excellent dialogue.
Interesting subplots going on as well that include drugs and human trafficking and some not so ethical acts by the attorney but done for a good cause.
Angela Dawe did a great job narrating. She is normally not on my top narrator list but I believe she has found her niche with this series.
    This book is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

    "Mediocre Chick-Lit"
What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Our lead character, Samantha Brinkman, we're supposed to believe is some fancy lawyer, who goes on TV shows yet still speaks using a "girl from the block" slang, all the time. Plus the narrator made it sound even more ridiculous, and it really turned me off. I don't think that she was a very good selection as the narrator for this story.

Was Moral Defense worth the listening time?

I'm not sure was possessed me to listen to the second book in the series, after I wasn't especially thrilled with the first one, but I'm definitely not going to continue on this series. The series of highly unlikely events just compounds the ridiculous of the narration.

"Another Fun Ride with Sam Brinkman"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would so recommend this audibook to friends who like a little legal mystery with some twist and turns and a shady lawyer. With this story they will get all the physiological twist and turn story telling that you would get in a good TV movie of the week and a bit of Los Angeles acting as not just background but as a character in itself.

What other book might you compare Moral Defense to and why?

I would compare this book to The 7th Canon, by Robert Dugoni. Another mystery lawyer book that has twist and turns and a lawyer that is willing to go the extra mile for his client. Even if the extra mile may be a little not so legal up and up.

Have you listened to any of Angela Dawe’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, I have not listened to another book narration by Angela Dawe but I applaud her great performance in this book. I would like to listen to more of her narration in the future. I was impressed by her ability to transform into all those characters, male and female, and I'm also impressed with very well pronunciation of all those Spanish words. Made it seem so authentic. Brava to her for doing such a stellar job.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Samantha Brinkman, the lawyer who works for justice.... Legal or Not.

    Any additional comments?

I enjoyed the first book for it's high adrenaline story line but I did appreciate this book for all it's twist and turns and even two of the side stories. I'm not a fan of books that have way too many side stories but for this book it worked. It helped flesh out the character of Samantha Brinkman and to show her complexities and how low she will go to get things done; legal or otherwise. She's sort of the anit-hero. Not all goody goody and high morals like that of Supergirl but a bit more like the Merc with the Mouth... aka: Deadpool. It's all about getting the job done and exacting justice whether it's in the courtroom or street. I like that.

    "Darned good legal thriller!!"

Moral Defense follows Blood Defense in Marcia Clark's new Samantha Brinkman series. In the two outstanding novels Clark has developed a seriously likeable yet deeply flawed protagonist. In my opinion the first two novels in this series are equally outstanding, but the narration of Moral Defense is much better than that of Blood Defense. Those listeners familiar with Clark's earlier Rachel Knight series with find the Samantha Brinkman series more serious/less playful and will also note Clark's improvement/maturing both as a writer and storyteller. I have complained about Angela Dawe's narrations in several past Audible reviews. Either she has gotten better or my taste has changed because her narration of this novel was excellent

It is ironic when John Grisham and Marcia Clark release legal thrillers two weeks apart and Marcia Clark's release is so much better than Grisham's that you question, "Why read Grisham at all?"

"Good Mystery and Lots of Action"

Lots going on so if you don't like to bounce around, you won't like this book. I liked it but found that I didn't care much about what happened to the gangbangers...but apparently Sam gets into defending everyone which is the bane of a defense attorney. The main story about the murder of the teenager and his father was intriguing and kept you guessing right to the end. The ending has Dale and Sam more in tune than out so that seems a good thing but I'm sure we'll find out more in the third book. I like this series and I like Samantha. She seems like a real attorney with baggage and a strong moral compass but that gets tweaked now and then. Angela Dawe was an excellent Samantha. Very good. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 only because there was so much going on, it was hard to keep track.
