Summary

Meet Detective Chief Inspector John Luther. He's a murder detective. He's brilliant; he's intense; he's instinctive. And yet there are rumours that DCI Luther is bad - not corrupt, but tormented.

The first in a new series of novels featuring DCI John Luther takes us into Luther's past and into his mind. It is the story of the case that tore his personal and professional relationships apart, and propelled him over the precipice.

Weirdly present tense

So obviously written by a scriptwriter, this doesn’t read like a novel but like a screenplay. It works though, once you get used to it.

Only really worthwhile if you’ve seen the series - but a good fill in of background.

excellent

Luther is a very adult title and is very graffic and genuinely shocking. However it is also riveting from start to end a truly gripping and exciting story which is performed brilliantly.. I loved this book.but it's not for the faint of heart.

loved it - Can't wait for more

I enjoy watching Luther on the box but this book gave so much more. It was a bit violent and gory at times but engaged me the whole way through. I think this is the the first book in the series and I hope it is not the only one.
Narrator was excellent and the end was gripping.

Best book I’ve read in a while

If your a ‘Luther’ fan, then this book is for you. It’s set in the lead up to the t.v series, and it’s ending of the book, explains the beginning of the tv drama.

Unnecessary dog torturing and cruelty

The overall story was well written and paced well, and it definitely fits with the hyperreal cartoonish violence of the TV series. However, every chapter seems to involve graphic description of dogs being tortured or abused. Not only is this horrible to read but it's unnecessary to the plot and seems like a lazy way to say "this person is bad". The dog body count in this book is far higher than the human one. It's a weird and creepy recurring theme that makes you think of the author every time you encounter it. It lifts you out of the plot and makes you think, what has he got against dogs?

Addictive

I was hesitant as I didn't much enjoy some of the TV adaptations but gave it a try and thoroughly enjoyed it. Well written, great narration - you can't really ask for more.

Gripping and compelling.

The only criticism I have is the narrators voice for Luther was....well...not right is all I can say, the rest however was superb. The story is compelling and sad, with hints of "oh my gosh!!!!"

Spoiled by the narrator

I have always enjoyed the BBC series of Luther so I was delighted to see the book on audible. However it is spoiled by the narrator and sadly I haven't finished listening to it because his voice is so annoying!! Really disappointed as the story so far is good but the narrator is spoiling it for me. :(
