Summary

New York Times bestselling author Stephen Coonts delivers another nail-biting thriller starring CIA Director Jake Grafton and his right-hand man, Tommy Carmellini.

The president of the United States stands on an outdoor stage, flanked by powerful members of his administration and party. Television crews are preparing for broadcast. High above the stage, on a nearby rooftop, a decorated sniper adjusts the scope on his rifle.

Afterwards, America will never be the same.

Jake Grafton and Tommy Carmellini suddenly find themselves on the wrong side of the law when a public act of violence throws the country into chaos just before a presidential election. After martial law is declared and rioting begins, Grafton and Carmellini must risk everything to unravel a massive conspiracy and help a new resistance movement rise up against an unimaginable enemy....

Too right wing at times.

Good story, well told, but a heavily right wing US political agenda I think. However this does not detract too much for overseas readers, not sure how it will sit with US Democrats though!

A RIGHT WING RANT!

I usually enjoy Coonts's books, but this is an absurd fantasy in which the author lets rip with both barrels against Muslims, Mexicans, liberals, socialists, abortion, taxation, intellectuals, climate change theories, and anything else that doesn't fit with apple pie and mom.
A corrupt (naturally)black president declares martial law and appears to be heading for a dictatorship. As a result, Texas secedes from the union and declares independence.
The book is complete idiocy, but if you like guns, blood and Donald Trump types, you'll love it!

Great read

Every American that cares about this country should read this book. It is right out of today's headlines and makes you look at everything our President does through new eyes.

EXCELLENT! MAGNIFICO!

A FUNtastic fictional account of a corrupt POTUS and bloated federal government...sadly, it is closer to prophecy than fiction!

So you think it couldn't happen? A dictatorship in America, just exactly what could cause that to occur right now?

I had a hard time putting this down. It's so plausible that it is scary. I read this just after reading an older Vince Flynn book called Term Limits. Reading these back to back is jarring!!! Great book!

Vest non PC depiction of modern America in fiction form

Outstanding depiction of our society.
Everything from issues with illegal immigrants, gun control, federal government overstepping, and pointless racist riots and mob rioting. It was amazing!
Everyone should read this, and think about what we are becoming.

Different perspective for sure

This book is not PC and will offend many. I am more middle of the road but this does provide a thought process millions of Americans are feeling and what the existing divide between us could lead to for our country. Even if you totally disagree with what is said it is the view of many and shows we had better get our act together and reach a compromise that will hold us together as Americans or risk losing everything and going the way of The Roman Empire and other great civilizations.

A shocking view of America's future!

I don't usually write a review, but I feel morally obligated as an American to write the praises of this book!!!! The parallels between this work of fiction and The present-day political drama here in the USA are frighteningly real! I strongly urge all lovers of freedom to read and embrace this book. May God bless Stephen Coontz for having the guts to write the superb novel!!!!!

Today's Nightmares

This book is so pertinent to today's situations that you will think you are listening to a newscast. It is riveting and downright scarry on how easy todays fiction could be tomorrow's reality. It will open your eyes to the risks America faces.

This politically incorrect author is a brave man!

Liberty's Last Stand is a remarkable political/espionage thriller. It is set in August 2016 less than 3 months before the presidential election. As he nears the end of two terms in office Democrat President Barry Soetoro uses some relatively small terrorist attacks, compared to 9/11/2001, as the excuse to launch himself into his planned position to be US president for life. He declares martial law, suspends habeas corpus, dissolves Congress arresting the Republican members, arrests his political enemies imprisoning some and executing others, issues an order confiscating all guns in private hands, dissolves the entire US judiciary substituting courts martial, and orders federalizing the National Guard troops in all states. Soetoro's most effective tool is the use of the many executive agency (eg., FEMA, EPA, Fish and Wildlife Service, Dept. of Agriculture, etc., etc.) SWAT-like units he has been arming to the hilt and training for more than 7 years for the purpose. Only Jake Grafton, Tommy Carmellini, a few other patriots, and the state of Texas stand in his way.

While I believe such a situation is very highly unlikely, I suspect there are many leftists in the US would cheer such a move. In any case it makes for a grand suspense novel. I enjoyed listening to Liberty's Last Stand. Eric Dove's narration is excellent
