Summary

From the globally best-selling author of Cast Iron, Coffin Road and The Blackhouse, an explosive new thriller set in the Outer Hebrides.

Husband and wife Niamh and Ruairidh Macfarlane co-own Ranish Tweed: a Hebridean company that weaves its own special variety of Harris cloth, which has become a sought-after brand in the world of high fashion. But when Niamh learns of Ruairidh's affair with Russian designer Irina Vetrov, then witnesses the pair killed by a car bomb in Paris, her life is left in ruins.

Along with her husband's remains, she returns home to the Isle of Lewis bereft. The Paris police have ruled out terrorism and ruled in murder - making Niamh the prime suspect, along with Irina's missing husband, Georgy. And so French Detective Sylvie Braque is sent to the island to look into Niamh's past, unaware of the dangers that await her.

As Braque digs deeper into the couple's history, Niamh herself replays her life with Ruiairidh, searching her memory for those whose grievances might have led to murder. And with each layer revealed and every unexpected twist uncovered, the two women find themselves drawn inexorably closer to a killer who will not turn back.

Very disappointing

I have read or listened to all Peter Mays previous books with great pleasure and so I have been looking forward to this one ( pre ordered in July 2017)
The narrative performances were excellent. I always enjoy listening to Peter Forbes voice though for me it was unnecessary to have Anna Murray.
The story left me frustrated.
So many holes and inconsistencies. There was too much incidental detail and very little depth to characters
Odd story details - cctv in Stornaway but none from the streets of Paris- please!
Surely out of date misogyny in the French police force!!
The ending (which I won’t reveal) was so implausible and so sentimental!
Sadly for me this was hugely disappointing book

A good start, a good middle, then disaster.

A great start, good characters, interesting plot, interesting background and atmosphere, but a very lazy ending.
I would still recommend it as a read but do not expect a Peter May classic. He is the best at setting mood place it is a shame that he fell short this time.
Read it and enjoy it for the high standards it has for most of the book.

Preposterous Premise from start to Finish!

I have read all the "Island " books by Peter may, starting with The Blackhouse, and think they have all gone downhill since then. "I'll keep you Safe" carries an incredulous plot, with ridiculous characters, and a heroine who is so weak, she is constantly, and too easily manipulated throughout. The narrators local dialect, although charming, adds to the novels problem by giving the Scottish characters a voice which sound childishly naive, but lending to the whole, a murder mystery as written by "Miss Read".

Great from May...

Another very good Hebrides based story from Peter May. Initially the story begins with a fateful trip to Paris, but soon we are whisked back to the beautifully described barren scenery of the Outer Hebrides. If you are familiar with any of May's 'The Lewis Series', you'll know what I mean. If not, it won't take you long to visualise the unspoilt beauty of the location.
At first I found the dual narration a little strange - having been spoiled by Peter Forbes' flawless narration in the Lewis Series. It wasn't long, however, until I warmed to Anna Murray's narration of the backstory, with Forbes narrating the present day storyline.
I had high hopes for this book, and although it didn't quite reach the heights of The Lewis Man, I wasn't left disappointed. The tragic, twisting storyline hits you with a major surprise at the end.
On the whole, a solid story from Peter May, and one I'd recommend....

Back on Lewis again

I'm a big fan of Peter May's books, and an even bigger fan of Peter Forbes' narration. This story didn't disappoint, and I was particularly glad that the focus was back on the Isle of Lewis. I notice some reviewers didn't like the ending, but I did, even though it was slightly implausible - after all, it's fiction, not real life, so the author can end it however he wants to, and the clues were all there! I wasn't so keen on the female narrator's gentle voice and very slow and careful enunciation for this particular book. Though her accent was lovely, I did feel a bit like I was listening to 'Balamory' rather than a murder mystery... But the way the book is written demands 2 separate narrators, and to be fair, it would be hard for anyone who had to share the stage with Peter Forbes. Overall a gripping listen.

Ending disappoints

I am a great fan of Peter May and can never wait for his latest offering. I set aside a huge chunk of my weekend aside for this book. I was very impressed with the narration - I could listen to Peter Forbes read the phone book and the addition of Anna Murray was inspired. The beginning of the story is great - in fact I was delighted with everything until it got to about 1/2 hour before the end. Not wanting to give anything away all I will say is that I was really disappointed and felt that it really didn’t live up to Peter May’s usual standards.

I loved it

I enjoyed this book very much, Peter May is so good at drawing his characters and I usually empathise with them and care about their lives.

This story kept my interest all the way through, and I found it really difficult to switch off, I finished it in a day. (I do love audio books as you can continue reading while doing mundane jobs!)

I love Peter Forbes as Narrator, Anna Murray wasn't quite to my taste for the character she portrayed, I found her voice a little reedy and gentle for the character of Niamh, but she read well. In my experience, it is unusual for Peter May's books to have dual narrators, and given the skills of Peter Forbes I am not sure that it enhanced the telling to add the female voice.

A good story, well told and gripped my imagination, definitely a five star verdict.

Loved it!

An absorbing listen. Enjoyed both narrators and thought this worked really well. Always find it’s a bit of a stretch when a male narrator tries to do a woman’s voice. A well thought out plot, which takes you vividly from Paris to the Outer Hebrides, weaving richly back and forth in time from Naimh and Ruairidh’s childhoods to the current day.

What a load of rubbish

We really like Peter May's Scottish books, but the ending to this was eyewateringly, laugh-out-loud ridiculous and totally spoilt what had been a pleasant listen up to then. I'm still gob-smacked that such an entertaining writer could come up with something so bad.
