Publisher's Summary

From the globally best-selling author of Cast Iron, Coffin Road and The Blackhouse, an explosive new thriller set in the Outer Hebrides.

Husband and wife Niamh and Ruairidh Macfarlane co-own Ranish Tweed: a Hebridean company that weaves its own special variety of Harris cloth, which has become a sought-after brand in the world of high fashion. But when Niamh learns of Ruairidh's affair with Russian designer Irina Vetrov, then witnesses the pair killed by a car bomb in Paris, her life is left in ruins.

Along with her husband's remains, she returns home to the Isle of Lewis bereft. The Paris police have ruled out terrorism and ruled in murder - making Niamh the prime suspect, along with Irina's missing husband, Georgy. And so French Detective Sylvie Braque is sent to the island to look into Niamh's past, unaware of the dangers that await her.

As Braque digs deeper into the couple's history, Niamh herself replays her life with Ruiairidh, searching her memory for those whose grievances might have led to murder. And with each layer revealed and every unexpected twist uncovered, the two women find themselves drawn inexorably closer to a killer who will not turn back.

    "Ending disappoints"

I am a great fan of Peter May and can never wait for his latest offering. I set aside a huge chunk of my weekend aside for this book. I was very impressed with the narration - I could listen to Peter Forbes read the phone book and the addition of Anna Murray was inspired. The beginning of the story is great - in fact I was delighted with everything until it got to about 1/2 hour before the end. Not wanting to give anything away all I will say is that I was really disappointed and felt that it really didn’t live up to Peter May’s usual standards.

    "I loved it "

I enjoyed this book very much, Peter May is so good at drawing his characters and I usually empathise with them and care about their lives.

This story kept my interest all the way through, and I found it really difficult to switch off, I finished it in a day. (I do love audio books as you can continue reading while doing mundane jobs!)

I love Peter Forbes as Narrator, Anna Murray wasn't quite to my taste for the character she portrayed, I found her voice a little reedy and gentle for the character of Niamh, but she read well. In my experience, it is unusual for Peter May's books to have dual narrators, and given the skills of Peter Forbes I am not sure that it enhanced the telling to add the female voice.

A good story, well told and gripped my imagination, definitely a five star verdict.

    "Wow. Great evocation of place."

Characters I could identify with. Wonderful feeling of The Outer Hebrides. Good story. I guessed the murderer, but it did not matter as it is much more than a whodunnit.

    "Disappointed "

I was looking forward to the usual high standard of writing and narration. The narration was good as always but sadly the story was not. Little suspense and mystery more like a romantic novel and a very weak ending .

    "Disappointing"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

The female narrator - excellent narration by Peter Forbes

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The best part of the story are the chapters read by Peter Forbes. Least interesting are the ,childhood memories narrated by Anna Forbes.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Anna Murray and Peter Forbes ?

Not by Anna Murray - a big mistake to not have Peter Forbes narrate the whole book as with other Peter May Scottish novels.

Did I'll Keep You Safe inspire you to do anything?

Previous Peter May books inspired m to visit the Outer Hebrides - not this one!

"Preposterous Premise from start to Finish!"

I have read all the "Island " books by Peter may, starting with The Blackhouse, and think they have all gone downhill since then. "I'll keep you Safe" carries an incredulous plot, with ridiculous characters, and a heroine who is so weak, she is constantly, and too easily manipulated throughout. The narrators local dialect, although charming, adds to the novels problem by giving the Scottish characters a voice which sound childishly naive, but lending to the whole, a murder mystery as written by "Miss Read".

    "Loved it! "

An absorbing listen. Enjoyed both narrators and thought this worked really well. Always find it’s a bit of a stretch when a male narrator tries to do a woman’s voice. A well thought out plot, which takes you vividly from Paris to the Outer Hebrides, weaving richly back and forth in time from Naimh and Ruairidh’s childhoods to the current day.

    "Remarkable "

Another clever tale with Peter May’s characteristic story telling swinging from the present to the past and back again seamlessly. The word smithing is second to none with his description of the Outer Hebrides. Peter Forbes’ narration is second to none with Anna Murray flawlessly telling the past history.

    Story
"Tedious story with an inadequate ending"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No. I found the story tedious. The ending was rushed (it seemed as if Peter May had just lost interest in the story), there was unnecessary violence at the end, and a fuller wrapping up was required. Also felt like much of the book was an advertisement for Lewis, and I became thoroughly sick of repeated lists of places. Peter May has written some great books, but this is not one of them, and I wonder if he is simply spreading himself too thinly.

Have you listened to any of Anna Murray and Peter Forbes ’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I have been impressed by all of Peter Forbe's narrations of Peter May's books. Given the structure of the book, moving from third to first person, I suppose two narrators were needed but I did not enjoy the listening experience.

Do you think I'll Keep You Safe needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

    Definitely not!
