Summary

Sophie's world is shattered when disaster bankrupts her family. She's still reeling from the news when she's offered an unexpected solution: Mr. Argenton, a wealthy stranger, asks for her hand in marriage.

Marrying Mr. Argenton will restore her family's fortunes and save them from scandal, but condemns Sophie to a life in Northwood, a vast and unnaturally dark mansion situated hours from civilization.

Sophie struggles to adjust to her new position as mistress over the desolate house. Mr. Argenton's relatives are cold, and Mr. Argenton himself is keeping secrets. Even worse, the house is more than it seems.

Mr. Argenton's young cousin, Elise, draws terrifying images. Doors slam. Inhuman figures slink through the forest surrounding the house. A piano plays in the middle of the night. Blood drips from the ceilings.

Sophie is inevitably pulled towards the terrifying truth: Northwood's ancient halls are haunted by the family's long-dead ancestors. The malevolent spirits - produced by grisly deaths - resent her intrusion into their home.

Trapped in Northwood and desperate for an escape, Sophie's fate is further complicated as she finds herself irrevocably drawn to the tall, dark-eyed man she married. She suspects her feelings are returned, but Mr. Argenton is hiding the truth about the house - and his secrets are so dangerous that they might just be unforgivable.

Engrossing

It's not the best book ever written, but it was highly entertaining and I enjoyed it. I'd say it was about the same quality as a melodrama like "Dark Shadows".

Too much romance for my taste.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

People who enjoy a good romance would love this book. It has a lovely ending with a nod to the next series.... I love that.
I personally am not a romance novel person. The other two books I have read from this author did not have a romantic theme so I was surprised.
Also, the main character drove me nuts, simpering perhaps?

What didn’t you like about Caitlin Kelly’s performance?

Couldnt put it down

Would you listen to House of Shadows again? Why?

Yes, I love the characters and the story. I was delighted to find out it was a two part story and wish it had even continued after that.

What other book might you compare House of Shadows to and why?

The sequel, of course.

Which character – as performed by Caitlin Kelly – was your favorite?

I think she did a wonderful job with Sophie.

If you could take any character from House of Shadows out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Joseph, of course!

Any additional comments?

I am becoming addicted to Darcy Coates. I love scary tales and old world era's and her writing is right up my alley.

Just alright

Needs a new narrator! Her normal voice is fine but when she tries to do other characters it’s just bad! Listening to this after Crimson Peak there are some similarities and I like the villain but not the zombies...... not sure if I’ll continue with the series.

Good ghost story.

Started out a little slow, but it's development kept me on edge until the end.

A Bit Smaltsy for Me

What made the experience of listening to House of Shadows the most enjoyable?

The story line was good but I did not find the characters believable. Of course the monster required the suspension of belief as well but I felt as if this were for a teenage girl. I have enjoyed some of Ms. Coates books but this one was not one of my favorites.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Predictable

What does Caitlin Kelly bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I enjoyed her characterizations with the exception of Mr. Hemlock.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No not any of those reactions.

Any additional comments?

The book is a light read and like I said I wondered if this was a "teen" or young adult book.

The story is a bit lacking in structure

I feel like could have been a great horror, but the reader was terrible and sounded 13. The characters need more backbone and structure. It was watered down in some ways and didn't build in suspense but being optomistic I have bought another to try
