Publisher's Summary

Hot Start, the fifth volume in the Cordell Logan series, is a fast-paced, adrenaline-fueled thrill ride filled with plenty of unexpected twists and full-throttle action.

A notorious, international big-game hunter and his beautiful, former dental hygienist wife are gunned down at long range late one sweltering summer night, while swimming naked on their seaside estate in opulent Rancho Bonita, California. Police investigators are convinced that the killer is a strident, outspoken animal-rights activist, with both military experience and a criminal record. The evidence against him would appear overwhelming - until rumors begin to surface that others may have had their own reasons for committing murder.

The last thing flight instructor, aspiring Buddhist, and ex-government assassin Cordell Logan wants to do is become involved in the investigation. He and the accused, however, have mutual friends. Reluctant at first, Logan finds himself caught up in an increasingly confounding enigma, one that swirls around a popular congressman with close ties to the White House, a European call girl ring, and a ruthless Czech crime boss who'll stop at nothing to protect his interests. Pursuing the truth will take Logan to places few others would dare go, exposing him to dangers that even he may not survive.

"excellent narration combined with great story"

Wry observations, self-effacing humor, a cat, a great landlady, and other well-formed characters make this world a reader's delight. While the action and activities can be dark, the writing still manages to lighten it up. Based on other reviews, I did skip book 4, not being in the mood for dark reading yet and book 2 based on comments about the narration. This book was not dark, and the life and people observations scattered throughout spiced up the story. Ray Porter did a perfect job on narration, again.

"I'm a new fantastic of David Freed!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Without a doubt, the whole series actually.

    Any additional comments?

I have just finished listening to Cordell Logan series and the only thing I would change is that I think the books are too short. The stories are great and the plots are well constructed with an easy to follow course of events. There are no super human heroics and no surprise characters that jump out at the end of the book to blame the crimes on. Instead what you have is a mystery that is so well crafted that you won't guess who done it until the author reveals who.
In this book a husband (who runs big game hunts)and wife are shot from long range. Logan's ex father-in-law calls him because he believes his nephew (an animal rights activist) has been framed and railroaded.
David Freed has a great sense of humor and sprinkles some really hysterical lines throughout. Many having to do with his cat Kiddiot.
    HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
If you are able to guess who and why then you are better than I am because I couldn't.

    Thank You.

    Story
"A fun 1st person mystery thriller"

If you like the escape and pace of mystery thrillers but wish that most weren’t so trite and disengaged, then try David Freed. The Cordell Logan series is intelligent, solid storytelling. The first person narrative strikes the right balance between the lead character’s superheroism and his humble struggle to become a better man. Fun references to Buddhist and other philosophers are scattered throughout giving the story charm and a deeper human context. Narrator Ray Porter is excellent as always making this a solid, entertaining read.

    Story
"Not the best but enjoyable! We love Logan!"

The mystery here is overshadowed by the relationship between Logan and his landlady. She is a gem, and the center of the most touching parts of the story as she ends up in the hospital in critical condition.

The plot is a bit far-fetched--Logan's ex-wife's nephew is accused of the murder of a totally unlikable man and his generous, delightful wife. And Logan still refuses to accept ole ex-dad-in-law's money for his efforts, and he really should since he never has enough. And then there's Alicia, Logan's cop squeeze who lives 250 miles away. She's whining that Logan doesn't appreciate her, and doesn't want to see her badly enough. I thought she had had enough in the last book! And then the president sends Logan to make the congressman resign? I'm sorry, that was just too much. Love the Samoans though.

Nevertheless, the story is entertaining, and we get to spend time with Logan again. Ray Porter is always a pleasure to listen to, as he voices everyone perfectly, accents and all.

"The Cordell Logan I adore is back!"
    Any additional comments?

I loved the first two books in this series, which has such a sweet balance between a character who wanted to be peaceful with his sense of duty. The next two books in the series seemed to forget Buddhism and were just violent. In this book, the sweet balance is back. I love this character when the author allows him to be complex!

    "Back on track!"

I'm really glad I decided to give this series another chance because I really enjoyed this book. Much better than the last two (though in fairness I might listen to them all again) the storyline seemed to get a fresh start. Now I am looking forward to the next book!
