    Story
"We are at the pleasure of the winds"

I confess, it was the beauty of the cover and a personal love of watching hot air balloons which led me to request a complimentary copy of Hot Air from the rights holder, via Audiobook Boom. And my thanks for this generous gift. This review is entirely my own.

The story surprised me. I had expected, from the blurb, a fast paced action thriller and, yes, there is that within the book but it is far more. It is the life story of Sean, son of a Navajo father and Irish mother, and of those closest to him. Briefly prefaced by Sean's present feeling of something wrong, it then moves into the past, tracing lives through Sean's growing and adult years before returning, finally, to the beginning.
The writing is simple, almost innocent, and in short chapters, each ended and prefaced by a snippet of music. The author, Denise Kahn, herself reads the book. Her voice is warm and full, slowly and clearly paced to perfectly fit the text, and her interpretation of all of the protagonists' conversations is very well done, both male and female, distinctive and with appropriate accents. The story is enchanting and the whole is beautiful, a pleasure to hear.

I loved this unexpected story with it's tapestry of family, friendship, love, war and vengeance. It is thought provoking and very visual with the gentlest of background hints of there being something more than simple living to life, a soft guiding hand for those who can listen and hopes for peace for all. Thought provoking, It would make a stunning film in the hands of a sympathetic director. A definite recommendation for anyone who likes to get to know the protagonists as well as enjoying realistic action.

There is passion, action, terror and others in between. Sean is quite the character being half Navajo and half Irish. He has a career that is thrilling and dangerous. I enjoyed the military romance with the danger that add to the excitement.

    "Hot Air"

The story is based around Sean (a half Native American half Irish) and his family. But yet it's so much more. You get glimpses in so may others lives that come in contact with Sean and at the end you don't feel as if you have missed any part of their stories. I love how the families on the reservation pull together when needed and learn to better themselves. I also love the eagle!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This book offers the listener everything a person could want in a great book: Suspense, humor, romance and mystery.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

I was constantly trying to figure out what was going to happen next. The story was so well written and narrated by the author herself. I became enthralled and determined to listen every moment possible. This is a nice long and totally involving story that will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat.

    Which scene was your favorite?

I really enjoyed it when Sean met his lovely Angela and treated her with respect and kindness. It's nice to know there are still some gentlemen around these days.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I was extremely nervous at the end of the story when the final moments were coming together. I had no idea what the outcome would be and I was unable to stop listening until the end.

    Any additional comments?

The story is a family; Native American father the mother is from Ireland and a son named Sean, whose journey through his life begins at age nine. Sean sees, for the first time, a hot air ballon that has drifted and lands on Sean’s family’s land in New Mexico.

    Story
"Slow going and late start of main event."

I received this audiobook for free from the author/ narrator / publisher in exchange for an unbiased review.

The synopsis of the book grips your attention with the main event of the book - the terrorist attack at the balloon festival. But that event doesn't start in the book for a long long time. The book is filled with a lot of backstory for the main character Sean and his childhood and his mother / father and his growing up years etc. I love books that provide a good backstory for character development. But there's a fine line between good enough and too much. Sadly this book falls on the latter category. There's just so much backstory that I got bored, waiting for the main story. And most of it was irrelevant anyway. The backstory should've been kept short, taking the readers to the main action quicker.

And the narration itself was poor. The audio quality wasn't great. Probably the equipment or the studio where it was recorded wasn't up to the task. And the narrator's narration itself was pretty dry.

    Story
    "Good story and writing"

Denise Kahn writes a wonderful and interesting story. I enjoy her story telling, and I like her writing. The main reason my rating is only 3 stars is because the story is a little too slow for me, and I wasn't that into the premise. Kahn does write a rich story, so I'm sure many will enjoy this book, but it's just not my cup of tea. Also, the synopsis for this story doesn't happen for a long time into the story, and I also hated that the lead character, Sean, was totally fine with his military buddy being a cheater on his fiancée. After that was mentioned, I just couldn't stop thinking about it, and it made me dislike the story a bit more. The fact that he's a cheater didn't add anything to the story, so I felt it was really unnecessary. I liked the Navajo aspects of this story, and I did like the hot air balloon stuff. I listen to the audio version, and Denise Kahn narrates this herself, and this is one of her better narration that I've listened to. Her narration still isn't among my favorites, but I see an improvement over the first book I listened to that she narrated. Good writing, Good story, just not right for me, but I think many will enjoy this story.

    "good!"

I enjoyed this book but struggled a bit with the past to present flip flop and it confused me a few times. Narration was good and story was unique and interesting.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

    Story
    "An Enjoyable Listen!"

An entertaining story of a young boy, half Navajo and half Irish growing up with a goal firmly in his mind. His family, his friends play a huge part, but discovering hot air balloons had one of the biggest impacts. The road he takes to become a “PJ” or parajumper paramedic, is long but determined.

When it leads him to Afghanistan, he never expects his efforts there to follow him home. Dangerous assignments, life saving rescues—both in and out of the Air Force, the love of his life, are all at risk from one vengeful terrorist.

Good story. Great descriptions of hot air ballooning—both history and how it works, overcoming trials, and becoming a parajumper, all with a cast of likable characters. Enjoyed the audio version from Audible very much narrated by the author herself.

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.
