Publisher's Summary

At the request of Her Majesty's government, private enquiry agent Cyrus Barker agrees to take on his least favorite kind of assignment - he's to provide security for a secret conference with the French government. The conference is to take place on the private estate of Lord Hargrave on a remote island off the coast of Cornwall. The goal of the conference is the negotiation of a new treaty with France. The cover story for the gathering is a house party - an attempt to introduce Lord Hargrave's two unmarried sons to potential mates.

But shortly after the parties land at the island, Lord Hargrave is killed by a sniper shot, and the French ambassador's head of security is found stabbed to death. The only means of egress from the island - a boat - has been sent away, and the means of signaling for help has been destroyed. Trapped in a manor house with no way of escape, Cyrus Barker and his assistant, Thomas Llewelyn, must uncover which among them is the killer before the next victim falls.

What the Critics Say

"Thomas supplies plenty of suspects and red herrings, ratcheting up the tension steadily as he winnows the targets to make this period adventure one of his best." (Kirkus)

    "Another entertaining story."

Will Thomas and Antony Ferguson, perfect match!
Mr. Thomas's story, read to perfection by Mr. Ferguson.
Got off with a good start, a bit slow in the middle and great finish. Llewelyn's internal dialogue, can get a bit lengthy but there's usually so much going on, it's necessary. Barker is his usual odd self but throw in Pricilla round the clock and the pressure is on him, it's so funny, how she's got him wrapped around her beautiful pinky, plus HIS FAVORITE PIPE! I laughed more about Barker's reactions and antics in this book than Llewelyn's in this one, DAMN AND BLAST! And Llewelyn doesn't particularly care to be bait.
They're on a rock and with none of their usual resources, so it's a bit different but for those of us who enjoy Barker and Llewelyn, it's extremely enjoyable.

    "Good read"

This novel represents a solid addition to the series. While it's well written and interesting, it's also a bit ludicrous in the same sense as a B horror movie. Even so, I recommend it. It's the best of the And Then There Were None style mysteries that I've read.

    "Best yet!"

This entry into the Barker & Llewelyn series is the best so far. It's full of action, right from the start, and the mystery is engaging. Almost gothic in the back stories of the characters.

"Maybe the best of the series"

Fun story with the agents. Not set in London this time, but on an island. I think this was the most suspenseful of the series. Still has all the Barker and Llewelyn twists and turns, and many surprises.
