Publisher's Summary

My name is Frank Butcher, and when I got out of my truck to deliver the last package of the day, I never expected to get blown up by anti-magic zealots.

Yeah, you heard me right. I said magic. I didn't know it was a thing either.

Now, an ancient artifact is the only thing keeping me alive, and to make matters worse, that artifact is what those cultists wanted. Still, I could have made a run for it, disappeared into South America and spent the rest of my life on a beach. I nearly did it, but I didn't.

Why? Because the cultists have offered me a trade. Come to them or they start killing kids.

    Story
""No more Mr. Nice Raggedly Handsome APD guy.""
    Any additional comments?

Frank Butcher was just an average guy, ex soldier now delivery man, when he was in the wrong place at the wrong time and caught up in an attack on a cancer clinic. Trying to defend the doctor, he was shot and woke up to find himself with a new heart, not the usual flesh and blood sort but an ancient artifact which makes him impervious to magic. He'll need it because suddenly he is central in a war of magic - two opposing sides, the Whites and the Ends with very different world plans but both with one immediate imperative: to secure the doctor's son, Max, for ceremonial purposes. But Butcher vows to qrescue him and, just possibly, save the world from - well, something!

This is a fast, almost non stop action story, told in the first person by Butcher, himself. Joe Hempel gives an outstanding performance, completely becoming the quick talking, sardonic, ingenious reluctant hero with the, yes, heart of gold when it comes to family matters. His pace is faultless, his repartee given in just the right tone of voice and the text itself is read with such emotion it is rivetting, never, as can sometimes happen, boring. There is a very frequent use of swearing but, given the circumstances, who could blame Frank Butcher this indiscretion?

A fun book with magic thrown about throughout (lucky Frank has that heart), bodies piling, twists and turns and loads of imaginative scenarios. A great start to a new series. I look forward to the next. My thanks to the right's holder for gifting me this book, via Audiobook Boom.

Frank Butcher is really a man with a heart of gold. Or at least since he went one day to deliver a package to a cancer clinic, only to be attacked by magical forces. Of course Frank being a good guy as who he is, steps in to help and gets blown up. The end is very interesting and looking forward to the next audiobook.

    Any additional comments?

This listen had a bright and easy feel to it from the first words spoken. The narrator was perfect for the youthful snark that was our reluctant hero.

The story itself was interesting - magic for everyone or no one. As well as this story was written, it's the narrator that made it work. Loved it!

“This audiobook was given by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review."

Normally, I stay away from books as short as this. I'm so glad that I went ahead with this series! Frank is quite a character and I enjoy his plucky humor. It adds the book's solid core of action.

I think what really surprised me about this book is how defined the characters are despite the listen being only 5 hours long! I didn't feel like too much was left out or missed. Frank is a great protagonist surrounded by colorful characters that bring this book to life.

I think the detail that brought this from a 4 to a 5 for me was the detail involved. Frank is a cinephile. His movie collection and knowledge are profound. His quotable moments and inspirations are all things that are near and dear to me and I found they pushed me over into loving this book, and Frank. Well, that and his chin. I highly recommend you give this book a shot (and its sequel, which is also a 5 from me!)

    "Good start to a series"
    Any additional comments?

Really good start to a series. Very entertaining and enjoyable. Well written, full of fun, humor and action. The story pulls you in from the beginning and never lets go. Interesting and engaging storyline/plotline. Looking forward to the next installment.

Action, suspense, magic, a little romance and much more.

All Frank was trying to do was his job. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time and he was suddenly thrust into the middle of a magic war against his will. Now that his life has been saved by that same magic he is in deeper than ever.

    Interesting cast of characters.

Joe Hempel does a great job with the narration. Nice voice easy to listen to for long periods of time. Clearly spoken. Nice even pace. Great character voices. Great delivery of the humor. He brings the characters and story to life through his narration. Perfect narrator for this story. All around very enjoyable.

    "Fun Urban Fantasy"
    Any additional comments?

This is a lighthearted and fun story with engaging characters. Frank, the main character, is an unlikely hero who steps up to the fantastical challenges thrown at him by two feuding magical groups. Frank’s style is to use a lot of sarcasm and humor to deflect his fear but it generally works for the story. The story is mostly about fighting the bad magical guys, but there is a little bit of a love interest that will hopefully develop in the next book. The only issue I had with the story was the foul language. I felt it was a distraction and did not add to Frank’s character. Overall I was entertained and can recommend the audiobook.

The narrator, Joe Hemple, does a great job with the characters, keeps up a nice pace for the story and is easy to listen to. I think he nails the character of Frank.

I was given a free copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

"Jack Burton meets Jason Bourne - with magic!"

I think the title to my review says it all! Jack Burton meets Jason Bourne - with magic!

I found this book enjoyable and fun. The only complaint I have is that it is a tad on the short side.

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

    Story
"Frank's heart gets him into a lot of trouble."

One wisecracking delivery man, with an ancient relic for a heart, stuck in the middle between two secret societies locked in a magical battle.

Okay, did the world really need another wisecracking magical hero? I wasn't sure at first, but Frank Butcher's genre references, and narrator Joe Hempel's portrayal of him, managed to win me over. Sure Frank has some “salty” dialogue, but I bet any of us would be cussing like a sailor were we to find ourselves in his situation. I enjoyed the world building as well as the references to Frank's DVD collection...I could certainly relate to that! It was a fun, action-packed ride to take as I drove myself back and forth to work. I plan to listen to more books in this series. I say give it a shot.

    "Modern day mysticism"

Fans of Dresden files and those like it will enjoy. Well written story with relatable characters. Good myths and magic behind the characters and their powers. Picked this story up because the narrator is one in familiar with and whose works I enjoy. He did not disappoint. Highly recommend the story.
