Publisher's Summary

When his father disappears in a freak boating accident, something smells fishy to ex-marine Billy Ryder. Now, after two decades away, Billy has come back to Pleasantville, Florida, a town whose surf is only rivaled by its share of sun.

Only Pleasantville isn't how he remembers it. A local gang has taken over the small fishing village and has scared the locals into submission, and worse, they just may have killed his dad for trying to stop them.

Now, if Billy wants to bring them to justice, he'll have to do something he hasn't done since his mother died. Step back on a boat.

That's okay though because after six tours in Iraq, Billy is really good at rooting out evil. And Pleasantville has a whole lot of evil.

Author's Note: If you're looking for a lazy slice of life Florida book don't buy this. If you want guns, guts, and action in the vein of Clive Cussler that takes place along the Florida Coast, buy this book.

"You really wouldn't like him when he's angry!"

Billy Rider left his hometown of Pleasantville in Florida two decades before and hasn't been back since. Until, that is, he receives a phone message from his dad asking him to come at once, and then the sound of thunder claps exploding behind his father's distressed voice. Unable to get a callback, Billy drives for two days solid to the home of his old man, Bob. to find it has been trashed. Readers, enjoy the peace of these opening pages: after this, there won't be time to breathe.

This book is really action packed with bodies strewn about like confetti. Determined to find his father, Billy becomes a one man tornado of criminal extinction, punching and shooting his way through, it seemed, almost the entire corrupt population of his old town. And gets the girl along the way. Wow. The real mystery is how did he survived the preceding twenty years without being locked up and the key conveniently lost? I must confess, I loved it.

Without the terrific reading by Joe Hempel, however, it could have had a far more unreal and sinister feel. Yes, disbelief needs suspending big time, but Mr.Hempel's characterisation has Billy, from whose point of view this story is told, as a slightly sardonic but remorseful figure, blaming himself for almost everything he can, but especially for having left behind his old girlfriend without a word when he left to join the military all those years before. His need to find his father dominates everything, however, other than the stubborn determination not to let other innocents be caught and harmed in what he perceives as his fight. Fully voicing all the characters individually as well as carrying the ongoing text with gusto and excitement, the narration is a superb performance.

More like a real life comic hero figure than is usually to be found in mystery thrillers, Billy Rider is a character to watch out for in future books. What will he do next, I wonder? Perhaps singlehandedly overcome Isis? My thanks to the rights holder of Hard Tide, who generously gifted me with a complimentary copy, via Audiobook Boom without any expectations of return. Not to be taken too seriously, this is an easy listen and for everyone enjoying fast action, fantastic, furious fun.

I enjoyed listening to this thriller on the sea book. I has good character development, liked Billy (ex-marine) who was a badass trying to save his father. This book is full of violence, gangs, drug lords and corrupt local law on land and sea.I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. THANK YOU

"Very good start to some great adventure."

Hard Tide is a fast paced, nonstop action fest. Very well written fun. I felt like I was watching a movie and enjoyed the fact that when Billy was searching for Mr. Mandrake, it was very easy to map out the path he took through the ship. Very good writing. Did I mention, it was non stop. From the first interaction with one of the bad guys, Billy goes from one bad situation to another.
The Narrator, Joe Hempel, did a great job. I have listened to several of his books and I am always impressed. Great Narrator.

    "Roller Coaster Ride of Adventure!!!"

Hard Tide: Florida Coast Adventures, Book 1 by Johnny Asa is a fast moving action packed audiobook. Billy Ryder is a retired marine. He gets an odd phone message from his father that sounds like his dad's life is in danger. So off we go with Billy to Pleasantville, FL his hometown that he has not returned to since enlisting in the marines. The town is controlled by a gang known as the Scorpions. Billy will stop at nothing to find his father. Enlisting help along the way from a fellow marine he served with and the girl he left behind. I highly recommend this audiobook. There are tons of action and plenty of mayhem. This story moves quickly and his highly enjoyable. I know this shows my age but it reminds me a great deal of the Mack Bolan novels of the 80's and 90's in the best possible way.

The narration is done by Joe Hempel. Once again Mr. Hempel provides an excellent performance voice a cast of varied characters where each is unique and memorable. I always truly enjoy Mr. Hempel's narration.

"Excellent series starter!! Can't wait for the next in series!!!!"

Although some of the action was a little far fetched, I LOVED this book. It is full of action from the get go and keeps you guessing. I could not put it down and finished in one sitting. The narration is excellent too! I will definitely listen to the next book in the series. I received a review copy at my request and voluntarily reviewed.

    "A Compelling adventure thriller"

Hard Tide starts with Billy Rider receives a voice mail from his father. The message begins with his father speaking and then someone else comes and Billy's dad is confronting the man and it doesn't sound good. Then the message cuts off. Billy heads home for the first time in 20 years to find his father missing and the house ransacked. Finding some clues, he goes to a bar filled with bikers, some of whom are guys he went to high school with. And there is Mary Anne, the girl he left behind when he joined the Marines. She is with one of the bikers, a rough guy who hits her in front of everyone.

As Billy searches for more information, Mary Anne gets thrown into the mystery with him, along with a buddy who is a hacker. Bikers, gangs, drug lords and more await Billy as the path narrows to a point where one person knows where his father is, but won't tell him unless he kills the man at the top of what is going on.

Non-stop action, this just kept going from one dangerous situation to the next with no let up. Great for a fast paced read/listen. Unfortunately, that left a lot of character development out. We learn a little bit about Billy and Mary Anne's high school days, but little is told about their lives now. I don't think there was any mention of what Billy does for a living, or how he could just take off like he does if he has a job or other responsibilities.

Nitpicking aside, I really did enjoy this book. It went so fast, I could hardly believe it when it ended. And Joe Hempel did a great job of narrating. I love his work and he is perfectly suited for these kind of stories. He always provides some humor to the main character while keeping the story moving and relaying emotions in his voice.

    "Action packed thriller"

Billy Ryder gets a voicemail from his father, and he hears an argument and violence on the other side. Billy decides to travel back to Pleasantville, his home town, to check on his father, to discover that he is missing and he may be mixed in some shady deals.

This is an action packed thriller with some twists and turns, and a main character who will need to face his past and evolve to be able to save what he cares for. The characters feel real enough to be able to care for them, and the action didn’t stop, which kept my attention until the very end.

I felt the end a bit rushed, so much that I was not sure we were going to get closure in that short time, but we did. I guess I expected a bit more from the main goal Billy had.

The best part of this audiobook is the narration. I don’t think I would have enjoyed it so much otherwise. Joe Hempel’s narration is always top notch, keeping the listener interested and delivering great character performances. You just can’t go wrong with Hempel.

It was an okay book, entertaining and light but forgettable. The main highlight for me was the narration.

I received a copy of this book in audio format from the narrator in exchange for an honest review.

“I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.”
Fast paced. We have a one man wrecking ball on our hands! I would've preferred it be a little more realistic...some of the fights just fell flat for me.
However, keeping in mind that it is a book not real life, I thought the book was good and entertaining & kept me interested right to the end.
If I ever need a man to so save/fight for me...I will be hoping for a man just like Billy Ryder. Take a chance people...you will enjoy the book, I look forward to reading the next book. :)

"A fun listen, action packed, but lacks depth . . ."

I had to give this listen a middle of the road rating simply because, with as much potential as the story had, it veered toward the unrealistic as opposed to working out a more realistic drama. The narration was good and the story was rather interesting so there is promise in that this is a first book of a series and room for improvement. I would recommend this for those that are looking for an action filled book and not necessarily a work of literature. A review copy of this audiobook was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in return for this unbiased review. My hope is that this review helps in your decision to obtain this book.
