Summary

Tristram Abberley was an acclaimed English poet of the 1930s whose legendary reputation was sealed when he died fighting for the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War. Nearly 50 years later, his sister Beatrix is brutally murdered in her seaside cottage.

Her family are stunned by the crime - especially Beatrix's niece, Charlotte Ladram. But Charlotte has little time to mourn her aunt as 50 years of secrets begin to unravel. Beatrix is the victim of a dark conspiracy, one that her loved ones are powerless to defeat.

A harrowing quest for answers begins, one that uncovers a shocking tale of wartime greed and treachery and a vendetta seemingly without end.....

Great Earlier Work From Robert Goddard

Typical Robert Goddard, having read this years ago, it was great to listen to to it in audio format. A gripping yarn with the main character and ultimately, hero, the somewhat downtrodden accountant seeking to prove his brothers innocence and becoming embroiled in a life changing adventure, with plenty of twists and turns on the way.

The narrator is so suited to Goddard's style, I hope he gets to do the set. I have listened to samples of other narrators but John Telfer really seems to capture the essence of Goddard. 10/10 for his performance.

A growing crescendo

Took time to introduce all the characters, but grew steadily into a very enjoyable mystery, with the requisite twists and turns.

Good Story

Robert Goddard always writes good stories with lots of twist and turns. Maybe I'm bad at plots, but I actually got the main culprit wrong, but the part of the plot involving a piece of furniture was very predictable. Always enjoy his books, this was not his best, but enjoyable and engaging.

Convoluted

As usual, Goddard's plot was overly convoluted. Nevertheless, he keeps the pages turning with his brilliant scene setting and use of language.
