Summary

The year is 1969, and 10 guests are about to enjoy a weekend at Tavistock Hall. The guests also include detectives Arthur Bryant and John May - undercover, in disguise and tasked with protecting Monty Hatton-Jones, a whistle-blower turning Queen’s evidence in a massive bribery trial.

The house’s owner - a penniless, dope-smoking aristocrat - is intent on selling the estate to a secretive millionaire, but the weekend has only just started when the millionaire goes missing, and murder is on the cards....

Excellent

Lots of great characters. Wonderful sense of humour throughout the story but shows some social insights into different lives.
Enjoyable and thought provoking.

Wonderful,as ever

I think like another listener I have become addicted to Bryant and May.
I was looking up something about Christopher Fowler to tell a friend, when I discovered he had died on March 2nd. Even though I knew he was ill it came as a shock and I kept thinking of him for days.
He and all his characters in the PCU seem like old friends and I would so liked to have met Christopher. I’m sure he would have been as fun as I imagined him to be. All I can say is I am so glad I discovered his books and what pleasure they have given me.
With Tim Goodmans superb narration as well it’s a match made in heaven.
This one was such fun,esp if like me you were young in the 60’s.

Hall of Mirrors

This was so good, so funny and I loved the chapter references of 1960s song titles. Brilliant! Thank you Christopher Fowler and Tim Goodman. Christine

A real treat...

Love Arthur and John. This one is wittier than usual with a cracking plot and good twists. A great take on the Agatha Christie/country manor genres. Great resonances with today and a refreshing look at the 60s. Super narration from Tim. Unlike other reviewers I didn't miss all the London references at all.

Possibly my Favourite

A classic country house mystery with some Wodehousian humour thrown in. Usually I love the history of London that the books contain , but this time the added interest comes from the story being set in 1969.
I've listened to the series out of order and I think this is the last before I go back and listen again from the beginning, making notes of places to visit and subjects to read up on.

Brilliant

The narrator brings a fabulous story to new levels,, possibly the best combination on audible, Bryant, May, Fowler, Goodman. First class, complete hokum but such fun

Great read but not so great narration

I have always enjoyed the Bryant and May books. They make me laugh out loud when I read them so was delighted to find this on audible. Sadly the narration is awful. The voices are pompous and irritating and spoiling the book. I'm finding it hard to finish. Lost interest.

Arthur Askey indeed !!!!

A thoroughly entertaining series of books. The author, Christopher Fowler’s vivid imagination and Tim Goldman’s superb delivery as the narrator are unmatched. The odd chuckle and sometimes outright laughter is not unusual for me when listening to the series, this coupled with some rather solemn moments makes for a well balanced piece of writing. Hopefully there will be more to come. As for Arthur Askey listen to the Hall of Mirrors book and you will find out !!!
