Summary

Attacked by a serial rapist intent on murder, Sergeant Louise Nightingale is recovering in a remote family home, content in the knowledge that the psychopath has been put behind bars for a very long time. She is unaware that he was just a student of a much more deadly opponent - a nameless, faceless terror who is intent on proving his prowess on the killing field. Leaving a trail of bodies in his wake, it soon becomes clear that Louise is his ultimate goal. Desperately trying to find Nightingale before the killer does, DCI Andrew Fenwick wonders if her continued silence means he is already too late.

Love it, love it, love it.

This is the first book I have read (or listened to) by Elizabeth Corely and was seriously impressed. The story was gripping, exciting and full of detail; but interesting detail. Not drowning on about detailing every spec of the scene like some authors. Anyway without giving too much information away, this book is about a yound detective and her senior who try and catch a serial killer and the chase is on! The author has created great characters. You really tune in on everyone, its so well thoought out and not at all over the top - but still very tense.

Gripping but too violent

I have enjoyed the author's two previous books, Requiem Mass and Fatal Legacy, in which DCI Fenwick and his two assistants, Nightingale and Cooper, methodically investigate murders with all the set-backs and blind alleys that make the stories seem more authentic. One of things I liked about the earlier books was that the author left the detail of the murders to the reader's imaginations, whereas in Grave Doubts, she wallows in descriptions of cruelty and torture of women in overly lengthy lascivious detail that spoiled the book for me. I was also irritated by the ridiculous psychological rubbish she has a psychiatrist spouting. I accept many of the the clichés of detective fiction, but felt the ending of this book went over the top.
Some reviewers have thought the romantic strand in this book verged on Mills and Boon but I found it a welcome relief from the horrifying violence.

Excellent book, excellent narration

This is the third Elizabeth Corley book I have listened to via Audible, all were excellent, and each one was better than the last. By sheer luck I managed to listen to them in the "correct" order and that fact made starting this one feel like joining old friends with the same lead characters present.

The story was credible, tense, detailed and never lost it's pace. The characters are all well rounded with enough detail of each provided to add to the story rather than overpower it.

What made this book even better than the previous two from the same author was the narration. I always consider the narration good if I don't notice it and hence it's not distracting from the story! However, this time I must complement the narrator, Charlotte Strevens, she was fantastic and her characterizations were absolutely perfect. So good was she that for the first time I searched Audible for other books she had narrated and will be downloading some in due course.

I recommend this book for both the story and the narration.

Not worth a star in my book

I read twelve reviews before buying this title and only one was critical. 'Fergie' gave it two stars which is one more than I can bring myself to give it. Should have listened to Fergie instead. It's trite, cliched and mostly implausible with touches of Mills and Boon chucked in. If you like your thrillers served up like this, then this is the book for you. Thank heaven I didn't pay ?35.00 for it. Definitely not one that's going into my Library.
My first really duff purchase though as I've had some great reads!

Fantastically entertaining

This was the first Elizabeth Corley audiobook that I listened to and, as a result, I have just bought the other two that are available here. I loved this book. The multiple plots that are woven through it are fascinating without being overly complex (just what you need when listening to an audiobook whilst commuting to work!). It's pretty grisly, but very realistic. I would definitely recommend this as a great listen!

Grave Doubts

I chose this book on the recomendation of Audible. It is an extemely long book, but it was gripping from beginning to end.
I don't suggest anyone reading it at bedtime as it might give them nightmares ! The book is very well written and I had great difficulty in stopping listening to it !!

Murder by clich?

Its all here; over 8 hours of textbook stuff. Doe eyed girl detective protected by moody widower detective in unspoken love. All mixed in with a psycho who starts off as menacing but drifts into some very clumsy plotting.
Stick on The Archers; there's more suspense there.

Masterly plot

This is an excellent "listen" ... really cleverly crafted and well read. The fifth star was witheld because of some irritating phrases and modernisms.

A bit cliched but still worth a read

I enjoyed this book as far as to say I got through several piles of ironing and a big garden clean up without noticing which always in my book shows I enjoy something. It was fast paced & had a few twists & turns but a lot of the story you could see coming and the ending was very much like it had been made for a tv drama. However I enjoyed it
