Summary

From the creator of the award-winning ITV series Prime Suspect, this is Jane Tennison's story, from rookie police officer to fully fledged detective.

Every legend has a beginning....

During 1974 and 1975, the IRA subjected London to a terrifying bombing campaign. In one day alone, they planted seven bombs at locations across central London. Some were defused - some were not.

Jane Tennison is now a fully fledged detective. On the way to court one morning, Jane passes through Covent Garden Underground station and is caught up in a bomb blast that leaves several people dead and many horribly injured. Jane is a key witness but is adamant that she can't identify the bomber. When a photograph appears in the newspapers showing Jane assisting the injured at the scene, it puts her and her family at risk from IRA retaliation.

Good Friday is the eagerly awaited date of the annual formal CID dinner, due to take place at St Ermin's Hotel. Hundreds of detectives and their wives will be there. It's the perfect target. As Jane arrives for the evening, she realises that she recognises the parking attendant as the bomber from Covent Garden. Can she convince her senior officers in time, or will another bomb destroy London's entire detective force?

Disappointing ... narrator spoiled the story

Loved the first two Tennison books but the narrator for this one is dreadful - the book was hard to listen to and the characters reduced to shallow uninteresting people I couldn’t bear listening to. I gave up before finishing the story the narration was so annoying.

Oh No!

Where is Julie Teal... her perfect narration of Hidden Killers was part of the reason for my purchasing Good Friday, and instead of her strong, resonant and entirely believable performance I'm listening to an annoying, slightly too high pitched narrator who gabbles across words, has no gravitas and like Jilly Bond has a feintly condescending 'jolly hockey sticks' intonation. A narrator suited to chick lit.

I'll give Good Friday to chapter 3 in deference to La Plante's great writing and the Tennison character before deciding whether to return it but definitely won't purchase anymore if Ms. Jessica Ball is narrating...spoiled it :-(

Cliche upon cliche.

What would have made Good Friday better?

Fewer unnecessary descriptions. They just dragged on and on and on.

What could Lynda La Plante have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Fewer cliches. More dynamic. For once I am surprised that I prefer the tv series to the book. It is usually the other way for me. I shan't hear/read any more books by Lynda La Plante.

Would you be willing to try another one of Jessica Ball’s performances?

Rather not.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Boredom.

Any additional comments?

Far too many cliches. Tennison's parents for one thing, also in her relations with men.Too many descriptions about food, clothes. I'm surprised that Jessica Ball did not know how to pronounce HARWICH.

Great story - terrible narration.

Why chose an actor with a pronounced lisp to narrate a book? It’s beyond me. I desperately wanted to hear the story but each chapter became more & more painful because of the twee lispy narration.
Thoroughly unsuitable choice of actor.

Thriller is a misnomer

In my opinion, unrealistic dialogue, not helped by poor narration and not knowing how to pronounce Harwich

Another great addition to the series

Tennison really sets herself apart again as an intelligent, talented detective surrounded by mostly male colleagues who don't always rate her opinion. The twists and turns with a central IRA plot take you by surprise, and just when you think you know what's coming, something unexpected occurs. A very enjoyable listen, yet again.
