Summary
Der Maresciallo Guarnaccia ist ein ruhiger bedächtiger Mann aus dem Volk und es gefällt ihm ganz und gar nicht, dass er in einem Mord oder Unfall im Kreise der Reichen und Intellektuellen ermitteln muss. Zu allem Überfluss wurde ihm dabei auch noch Staatsanwalt Fusarri zugeteilt, dessen bekannten Zynismus und Überheblichkeit er fürchtet.Was ist geschehen: Die englische Schriftstellerin Celia Carter wird tot in der Badewanne aufgefunden, während ihr Ehemann Julian total betrunken im Schlafzimmer nebenan liegt. Nichts deutet auf ein Verbrechen hin, auch Selbstmord scheint ausgeschlossen.
Fest steht jedoch, dass der Gatte ein nicht unbeträchtliches Vermögen erben wird. Guarnaccia wird sofort von heftiger Abneigung gegen den aalglatten Julian Forbes erfüllt, einem Mann, dem er sich bei der Aufklärung dieses Mordfalls einfach nicht gewachsen fühlt. Denn das ein Verbrechen vorliegt, davon ist der Maresciallo felsenfest überzeugt. Forbes scheint sich keine Blöße zu geben. Doch Guarnaccia wartet ab und beobachtet.
