Summary

'Thirty-seven years in the force, and if I was allowed to choose just one thing to erase from my mind, what's inside that room would be it.'

That's what a LAPD Lieutenant tells Detectives Hunter and Garcia of the Ultra Violent Crimes Unit as they arrive at one of the most shocking crime scenes they have ever attended.

In a completely unexpected turn of events, the detectives find themselves joining forces with the FBI to track down a serial killer whose hunting ground sees no borders, a psychopath who loves what he does because to him murder is much more than just killing - it's an art form.

unfortunately spoiled by the narration

I love Chris Carter books but the narration really spoiled this one for me. Someone like Robert Glenister who narrated the Robert Galbraith books, with a bit more gravel in their voice would have been better. I just kept losing interest due to the bland voice of the narrator.

Trying too hard

I have enjoyed all off Carter's books but finding small things starting to annoy me, especially if you're a fan and listened to them all lots of repetitive information that isn't really relevant. In this book I found he made Agent fisher sound simple/stupid at times which for an FBI agent is perhaps an issue! Huge jumps in the story which for a major investigation seemed unplausable, I felt Carter was trying too hard and trying to bring too much into the story, it already had a great story line without trying to make it seem unreal. Enjoyable none the less worth a listen.

Not for me this time.

I struggled with the characterisation, and the dialogue between the experts in their field seemed out of step with their profession and professional profile.
I have enjoyed other work by Chris Carter, but I found this work was not for me, so I have stopped at Ch25.

Good, but not my favourite Robert Hunter book.

After much anticipation I eventually received my pre-ordered copy of Gallery of the Dead. It’s a dark and typical Robert Hunter thriller, but sadly it’s not my favourite. I found the plot rather convoluted and not convincing. Detective Garcia sounded rather like Robin to Hunters Batman. And the flashback chapters were very different to Chris Carter’s usual style. Sadly it felt like a little bit of a cop out to me. However, having said all that, I was still caught up in this dark and entertaining thriller.

The plot unfolds a little too slowly

The story starts with a breathtaking episode, but following episodes are not arriving rapidly enough for me. After 2/3 the story gains a lot of speed and becomes thrilling ok. The performance is excellent in dialogues, less so in narration. Four stars are, however greatly merited.
