Publisher's Summary

In 2035, the southwestern United States is ravaged by drought, reeling from an environmental catastrophe that has left the landscape a chaotic, depleted ruin. California, still viably inhabitable due to its oppressive social controls, marshals state-of-the-art surveillance technology and totalitarian policies to preserve its fragile hold on rapidly dwindling resources and an increasingly unsettled population.

After a prominent California congresswoman is assassinated for her support of the state's secession from the United States, Nathan Fisher - accidental witness to a clandestine military-style operation - is drawn into an unraveling conspiracy that reaches the highest levels of power and threatens the lives of Fisher and his family.

Hunted by ruthless killers seeking to ensure his silence, suspected by the authorities, and aided only by a loyal Marine officer with a mysterious agenda, Fisher and his loved ones must somehow stay a step ahead of their relentless pursuers, navigating a ruined world in a desperate search for sanctuary.

"Warning: this novel ends in a cliffhanger"

The good news is that the second novel in the series will be released in 5 days.

Fractured State is set in San Diego area of California in the year 2035. Parts of the state have water rationing and most of the state is in poverty brought on by leftist state and local governments. Politicians are being murdered. A state of war exists between those who want to secede from the US and those who want to remain a US state. The novel certainly is action and suspense filled.

    "Beware of the cliffhanger ending!"

I think I was expecting a political spin and never figured out what it was or if it was actually there. This book was different enough from most everything in the genre, but still quite believable, IMO.

My only real complaint was that it was hard for me to keep track of the characters. I noticed that the author would alternate between calling somebody by their first name, their last name, their relationship to another character, etc. I usually appreciate this avoidance to repeating the same word (or name) over and over, but this may have added to my confusion. It may have also been the names, specifically, but I don't have a specific reason to say that is the case. I do know it would have been nice if the narrator had more voices in his repertoire, but I may be getting spoiled. ;-). I did think the narrator did a good job overall.

My only other complaint is that the ending is one helluva cliffhanger! I don't always have a problem with cliffhanger endings, but this one is a doozy! Thank goodness book 2 is already out!

Oh, my last comment... this book is a great value at under $8! I didn't even feel right using a credit when I could buy it so cheap!

    "so bored. much eye rolling"
What disappointed you about Fractured State?

this book is described as a possibly realistic idea of what life would be like in america after a disaster. i suppose that could be true. but as someone who enjoys non fiction that has a STORYLINE, it BORED me to tears. this book just drones on an on about guns, their technical specifications, the military, and covert operations.

sigh. the characters are wooden gi joe caricatures, the women are cast as stressed out crazies who are also damsels in distress, and the main characters are politically void.

i listened right up to the last 1 hour of narration in hope it would get more interesting, but it just never does. the pace never picks up. supposed military geniuses make obvious mistakes, the characters tend to just sit around with their thumbs up their ars**

skip it. i'd be returning it if i hadn't bought 2 books on one credit. (the other one was great).

What could Steven Konkoly have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

    written a better book.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Timothy Andrés Pabon?

    anyone without a monotone voice

What character would you cut from Fractured State?

    hmm, probably all of them

    Any additional comments?

just dreadful. i can't believe someone published this trash.

"The subject matter is very timely and interesting"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Yes and no. The premise is really timely to climate change. It is short on the science. It has a very action movie overall plot. I am more a science, tech person so I found the action/military chase and battles a little tiresome. However, I am writing a review which I very rarely take the time to do, so I guess I did enjoy it.

If you’ve listened to books by Steven Konkoly before, how does this one compare?

    1st time

What about Timothy Andrés Pabon’s performance did you like?

good overall narrator as we all know the narrator can just kill a book for audio. He was good.

Could you see Fractured State being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

It certainly would lend itself to film of either kind probably more of an action movie.

    Any additional comments?

I am going to try book 2.

Konkoly seems robe squeezing readers by writing serial books that cost as much as a complete novel. I hate such sleazy money grubbing.
