Summary

J.D. Barker's Forsaken is a remarkable debut, a gripping tale of suspense in the tradition of Stephen King, Dean Koontz, and John Saul. Truly the birth of a new master in the genre.

“J.D. Barker is a one-of-a-kind writer, and that’s a rare and special thing. Stephen King comes to mind and Lee Child, John Sandford. All one-of-a-kinds. Don’t miss anything J.D. writes.” (James Patterson, number on international best-selling author)

“Barker’s ambitious debut is aimed squarely at fans of classic horror. Witches, spells, miniature demons, and personal doubt give plenty to latch on to...the plot moves at a brisk pace...a promising start to a planned series.” (Publisher’s Weekly)

“After reading Forsaken, I completely understand why Stephen King would grant this author permission to reference his world from Needful Things. Barker is that good. You do not want to miss this book!” (The Haven Herald)

When horror author Thad McAlister began his latest novel, a tale rooted in the witch trials of centuries past, the words flowed effortlessly. The story poured forth, filling page after page with the most frightening character ever to crawl from his imagination. It was his greatest work, one that would guarantee him a position among the legends of the craft.

But was it really fiction?

He inadvertently opened a door, one that would soon jeopardize the lives of his family.

She wants to come back.

At home, his wife struggles to keep their family alive. Secretly wondering if she caused it all...a deal she made long ago. A deal with the Forsaken.

Hátíð the narrator

horrible whispering and dramatic narration ruins the book. I gave up after a few chapters so I can't speak to the story itself. I especially couldn't stand the voice of Ashley.

Crikey!!! What a Story!

What a fantastic book. It had everything, witches, past and present interwoven, foul little imps, and magic. A Harry Potter it certainly isn't. I found myself holding my breath until I turned blue.
I need to read the next book in this series, so forgive me if I cut this review short.

the narrator sucked any joy the book MIGHT've had

I'm a huge fan of the Four Monkey Killer series. So I thought I'd give this a shot too. I didn't know this was about witchcraft. Maybe people who like those kinds of stories might enjoy this but I'm not one of them. And the narrator was the biggest reason why I hated this book. Her narration was horrible and the voices were so annoying.

Unoriginal

I decided to listen to this novel because the author has been chosen to write the prequel for Dracula. As a horror fan I was very excited by this. Sadly, this novel does not deliver. The plot is unoriginal and stereotypical. The reading is completely over acted, especially the voice of the witch. When it comes to Clayton Stone, I’m not sure if he’s from the West Country, Ireland or Jamaica! Very annoying.
Not for a seasoned horror fan.

Suitably Scary

A horror writer is handing over his latest opus while his heavily pregnant wife and young child are left home alone. Really freaky wee demonic pixies terrorise the girls as the baddie from his novel seems to be coming to life before his eyes.

Stay to listen right to the end as there is a great nod to Stephen King in the epilogue.
