Summary

When Leonard Franks and his wife, Ellie, leave London for a dream retirement in Dartmoor, everything seems perfect. But one afternoon, Leonard goes to fetch firewood and never returns.

With the police investigation dead in the water, Ellie turns to David Raker. Raker tracks down missing people for a living, but nothing can prepare him for this. Because, behind Leonard's disappearance lies a deadly secret, buried so deep it was never meant to be found.

Enjoyable

Any additional comments?

Not a bad book. "I find missing people" a little over dramatic in my opinion. The main character is OK, I didnt particularly like him, rather self absorbed and full of himself and his ability. Nevertheless it is a well written book, the narration is good and it all flows along pretty nicely. Its just not great and not particulary sad when it finished. I will continue the hunt for another 5 star listen.

poor quality

Didn't finish this because:
1) It was badly written, with entire phrases being regularly repeated.
2) It was heading in the direction of a police corruption drama rather than an investigation.
3) The plot was lousy. The detective frequently dismisses entire lines of enquiry because 'he just knows', there is no thoughtful analysis at all.
4) Also there is no suspense or interesting descriptions of surroundings. Nor is there any psychological depth to the writing.

Can't think of anything positive to say other than that the narration was intelligible.

Gripping good yarn!

Would you listen to Fall from Grace again? Why?

Oh yes, in fact straight away

What other book might you compare Fall from Grace to, and why?

Shatter Michael Robotham

What about Ben Allen’s performance did you like?

Everything, faultless performance

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Raker gets the job done

Any additional comments?

This is a superb thriller with many twists and turns. I could not put it down and now I have finished it, I am going to listen to it again. One of those audible books you don't want to end but at the same time you want to get to the end to find out whodunit. More please!

Time I won't get back... sadly

Would you try another book written by Tim Weaver or narrated by Ben Allen?

No.Good narration but I did not enjoy the story. Started out promising but loses something as it focuses more on scenery than developing the characters. I didn't care about them so 16hrs later I was annoyed that the irrelevant end took so long to arrive.

What will your next listen be?

Not one by Tim Weaver.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The first.

What character would you cut from Fall from Grace?

The first psychiatrist ... can't understand the relevance.

Any additional comments?

Dull. I persevered hoping it would turn into the story it promised to be.

What did you like best about this story?

The storyline is very plausible and there are no 'holes' at all.

Have you listened to any of Ben Allen’s other performances? How does this one compare?

no i haven't.

Awful narrator!

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

What should have been an enjoyable book was spoilt by the reader. His main character was made to sound dull and lifeless. A dreary performance.

Has Fall from Grace put you off other books in this genre?

No, but I shall be avoiding any books read by Ben Allen in the future.

How could the performance have been better?

By using a different narrator.

It had me hooked to the last page! The ending was not what I thought it would be and the twist wad brilliantly thought out.

Excellent

I don't usually like novels that are written in the first person but this one was an exception.
The plot had many twists and turns and all of it was well developed.
It was definitely not typical of the genre and I was unable to guess whodunnit, which was wonderful for me.
Recommended.

Loved it

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Excellent story, keeps you guessing throughout. Fabulous narration, fitted the story perfectly. Likeable characters and a satisfactory ending. I'll be reading more by this author, with this narrator
