Audible Editor Reviews

"I opened this book to a random page, read five lines - and finished it at three that morning. It's the voice that does it: edgy, conflicted, desperately urgent, the voice of a young man who's both too smart and (if you believe him) not quite smart enough for the inexorable spiral of events into which he's dragged. This is a startlingly confident and deft debut." (Tana French, internationally best-selling author.)

Publisher's Summary

Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of You Don't Know Me by Imran Mahmood, read by Adam Deacon.

An unnamed defendant stands accused of murder. Just before the Closing Speeches, the young man sacks his lawyer, and decides to give his own defence speech. He tells us that his barrister told him to leave some things out. Sometimes, the truth can be too difficult to explain, or believe. But he thinks that if he's going to go down for life, he might as well go down telling the truth.

There are eight pieces of evidence against him. As he talks us through them one by one, his life is in our hands. We, the reader - member of the jury - must keep an open mind till we hear the end of his story. His defence raises many questions...but at the end of the speeches, only one matters: Did he do it?

    "It's interesting"

This first chapter makes me very curious for the rest of the story.

Even though English is not my first language, or maybe because of it, I did not find the accent annoying at all. To me it made the story from a first person perspective more believable.

"first chapter - so far a winner"

might take me a while to get used to the narrator's voice but he reads very well and with conviction. I'm very curious as to how it will end

    "Couldnt stand this narrators voice."

I wanted to enjoy this free chapter but couldn't get past the awful narration and only lasted one minute. I had to check it wasn't being read by Danny Dyer. Yes it was that bad......my poor ears.

    "AWFUL Narration"
What would have made FREE FIRST CHAPTER: You Don't Know Me better?

Gave up after 5 minutes, simply could not bear the narration. It's narrated from a 1st person perspective but with a "gangsta" accent which simply does not translate well on an audiobook. I am really disappointed because it sounds like a great story, but the gangsta was irritating beyond belief.

What could Imran Mahmood have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Not sure, did not listen to enough to form an opinion

What didn’t you like about Adam Deacon’s performance?

I understand what the narrator is aiming to achieve, but it simply does not work in my opinion, it is too colloquial, too "gangsta"
